We won’t get to see Will return in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2. Naturally, fans worried what that would mean for Josh Stewart’s character. Well, it turns out we don’t have to worry too much right now.

When Stewart shared on social media that his days of playing Will were over, fans panicked. Would that mean the series would kill Will off? This came off the back of Will facing a health scare in the first season of the revival, which turned out to be a false alarm.

The first two episodes haven’t addressed Will’s absence all that much. He’s away with work, and that’s all JJ has said so far. She did hint that there were some problems, though, telling Tara that even being with the one you love the most is hard work. Could this end up coming up as a storyline in the second season?

Erica Messer explains Josh Stewart’s exit from Criminal Minds: Evolution

Messer explained to Entertainment Weekly that the exit came down to issues with negotiating the contract for the second season. They all tried hard, but in the end, terms couldn’t be agreed upon. This is a business for actors and showrunners, and sometimes, negotiations just don’t work out.

The exit isn’t going to be addressed in the second season. At least, not in a way that will affect the storytelling. The second season picks up just two weeks after the events of Season 1. That means there isn’t really the need to worry too much about why Will won’t be in episodes. Him being away with work makes a lot of sense.

However, Messer admits that it will need to be addressed in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3. I’ll admit that I’m not sure why. While Will was a big part of the first season of the revival, he showed up as a guest star in the original series after his initial introduction. We don’t see everyone in the private lives of the agents, so he could just be mentioned as doing things off-screen.

The series does have an opportunity to tackle Stewart’s exit in a more devastating way in the third season, such as the way Hailey was written out. Or maybe there is just a breakdown in the marriage. But wouldn’t it be nice to just know Will and JJ are on good terms and that we just hear about what Will is doing?
