Sherlock & Daughter wrapped up its first season on The CW, and there's good reason to hope for another season of the underrated new take on the classic detective! The great news is the writers want more as well.

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Sherlock & Daughter season 1

This latest take on the iconic sleuth has a different spin on the character. It opens with Holmes (David Thewlis) not doing his usual great investigative work. That's because a mysterious group called the Red Keep has abducted Watson and Mrs. Hudson and forced Holmes to do their bidding to keep them safe.

That's when Holmes meets Amelia Rojas (Blu Hunt), a young American woman whose mother was murdered. She's come to London to find Holmes as her mother claims he's Amelia's father. While denying the claim, Holmes sees Amelia's potential as a sharp investigator and hires her as his maid and secret agent.

The first season of Sherlock & Daughter had the pair investigating the Red Keep, a complex mystery involving murder, smuggling, jewel theft, and a plot to overthrow the entire British Empire. Sherlock & Daughter season 1 concluded with the confirmation that Holmes was indeed Amelia's father and she decided to stay in London to learn from him.

It was a good wrap-up and shows why a second season can only make it better.

Why we need Sherlock & Daughter season 2

The idea of Sherlock Holmes as a father may be almost blasphemy to classic Holmes fans. However, the series worked mostly thanks to Thewlis's incredible performance as Holmes. He nailed the detective's brilliance, arrogance and unique style with a wonderful turn that makes him one of the best Sherlock actors in years.

He was matched by Hunt's fun turn as Amelia, full of spark with her own charm and humor to make for a fun character. The pair gelled perfectly with the compelling storyline and there's a lot of potential for a second season.

Indeed, writer Shelly Goldstein talked to Variety about how they had a lot of ideas for the show's first year they couldn't fit in and, thus, plenty to tell.

"They would just come popping out, and there were far too many for just eight episodes. If the fates are good to us, there are so many wonderful stories to be told with these characters."

Series creator Brendan Foley added that a second season would take Holmes and Amelia out of London for some new adventures.

"I think we'd like to take it international. At the end of the 19th century, society is moving from criminals robbing banks to criminals owning banks. Crime is blissfully international. I'd like to see what's happening in the U.S., Europe, Australia at the same time. This great, glorious British Empire was still in its heyday, but it's a big world out there."

Indeed, it would be fun to see Holmes and Amelia on some sort of journey abroad. Going back to America to tie up loose ends of Amelia's past is an obvious plot line, as Holmes in the U.S. would be interesting. There's also visiting Europe as part of a bigger case and Australia was still rising up from a penal colony into its own country.

There's also the obvious hook of how Dan Moriarty is still out there and likely ready to make trouble with some new enemies coming in. It rests on the idea of this newfound father and daughter handling their new bond while solving mysteries in the 19th century. Who wouldn't want a show about that? It's among the reasons to hope that Sherlock & Daughter is able to continue for some time.

Sherlock & Daughter is available to stream on HBO Max.
