While it originally seemed like a limited series, Apple TV renewed The Last Thing He Told Me. It did help that Laura Dave, who wrote the initial novel the first season was based on, wrote a sequel, The First Time I Saw Him.

Well, the sequel novel is going to be released around the same time as The Last Thing He Told Me season 2, and we can't wait!

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Last Thing He Told Me season 1.

Season 1 was a seven-part thriller with Jennifer Garner playing Hannah Michaels, a woman who finds out her husband, Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), is embroiled in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme. He drops a bag full of cash and his bratty 16-year-old daughter, Bailey (Angourie Rice), in her lap when he goes on the run, leaving her to find out that the man she thought she married was a fraud.

Episode 2. Jennifer Garner in "The Last Thing He Told Me," premiering April 14, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Hannah puts all the pieces together in Austin with the help of a U.S. Marshall, Grady Bradford (Augusto Aguilera), who helps her reconcile with Nicholas Bell, to avoid having to go into witness protection, with the understanding that their lives will be in danger if Owen were to ever be present in their lives again.

The Last Thing He Told Me season 1 then jumps from San Francisco to Austin, Texas, where Hannah learns about Owen’s late first wife, whose father, Nicholas Bell, was the crime boss of the Campano family. Owen turned over information to the Feds to convict him, so the mob killed his wife, making it look like a car accident. To protect himself, Owen took his then-four-year-old daughter and changed their identities, settling into a new life in San Francisco.

The first season ended five years after the deal. Bailey, now a young woman, and Hannah have moved on together until one day Hannah sees a man in a Santa-esque beard and wearing Owen’s wedding ring at her shop. She and this man exchange glances, and Hannah knows Owen is back.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 premiere date announced

Apple TV now has confirmed the premiere date for the second season. Get Friday, Feb. 20, 2026 in your diary, as that's when the first episode will drop. This show is likely to be a weekly release just like the first season and so many other Apple TV shows.

The sequel novel will be published on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, according to Deadline, so you'll have time to read the story before it's transformed into a series. The second novel is the basis for season 2, which sees Owen return in an attempt to reunite with his wife and daughter.

My hopes for The Last Thing He Told Me season 2 were dashed when we're told Hannah, Bailey, and Owen race to reunite their family before the past catches up to them. I really wanted Hannah and Grady to hook up. He was such an appealing character, and Garner’s scenes with him were far more fiery than those with Garner alone, who just blinked with a moue of disappointment when her husband disappeared.

Bailey played a pitch-perfect 16-year-old in season 1, who hated her stepmother and was navigating the perils of high school with her boyfriend. Bailey’s character arc was much more compelling, and she seemed genuinely upset that her dad took off without a trace. Hopefully, season 2 will keep a spark of their discord alive once Owen shows back up.

Returning from season 1 are cast members Garner, Rice, Coster-Waldau, Aguilera, and David Morse, who played a compelling conflicted Nicholas Bell. New cast members for season 2 include Judy Greer, Rita Wilson, Josh Hamilton, Nick Hargrove, Michael Galante, Josh Noble, Michael Hyatt, and Luke Kirby.

The Last Thing He Told Me season 2 will premiere on Feb. 20, 2026, on Apple TV.
