Things just can’t go Rudy’s way in The Rainmaker season 1, episode 5. He’s just too impulsive as he fights for his client.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for The Rainmaker season 1, episode 5.
Rudy and Sarah both get the chance to show off their skills in the courtroom, and there is only one who can come out on top. Meanwhile, Jackie manages to find a way to protect her life, but will Pritcher give up his attempts to get her?

Rudy wants to tell the court everything in The Rainmaker season 1, episode 5
Rudy is done sitting on the information that they have, with him initially wanting to tell Dot all about the roommate that Donnie Ray had in the hospital. Well, that goes as well as you would think, with Bruiser telling Rudy off for his impulsive actions.
Of course, Rudy argues that Dot deserves to know and use the information as she’d like, but this could derail the whole case. If the cops decide that they want to look into the chances of Pritcher murdering Donnie Ray, then it would end up closing the case with the focus being on a criminal one. Nobody really wants that at this point, although Rudy thinks that Dot should have that choice.
In some good news, the judge does decide to hear a motion about why the Tissue Committee documents should be used. Rudy is the one who wants to run the show on this, and really, Bruiser should just tell him to sit down and shut up.
As things stop going his way, he decides to tell the judge all about the roommate and the story of a nurse potentially killing him. I don’t blame Bruiser for her decision at the very end of the episode. Firing Rudy is the only safe thing she can do until he learns to be more composed in the courtroom.
It’s a good thing that they don’t share the fact that Pritcher’s mom died with morphine in her system. Sure enough, there is smoke inhalation, but she was knocked out with morphine first. So, did Pritcher kill his mom? What could this mean for the case as a whole?

Sarah shows off her arguing skills in The Rainmaker
What doesn’t help Rudy is going up against his girlfriend—or maybe ex-girlfriend—as she’s the one who Leo decides will chair the defense’s argument. She has the case law to back up why the Tissue Committee documents don’t need to be shared, and she does well.
So well that the judge is inclined to agree with the defence that the documents aren’t part of the case, and that they shouldn’t be used because of a HIPPA violation. This leads to Sarah and Brad sharing a moment of joy, but that turns to one of a potential romance and trouble, as Brad clearly has feelings for Sarah. Too soon, dude!
It’s not a complete win for Leo’s firm just yet, but they’re getting there.

Jackie gets the better of Pritcher
Meanwhile, we see Pritcher at the diner for his parole meeting while Jackie is in the truck of his car. Pritcher nearly gets caught, but fortunately, there is a staff member thowing out trash to disguise and muffle the sound of Jackie’s screams for help.
However, Jackie does convince Pritcher to let her into the diner to use the bathroom, which gives her a chance to pick up a phone. She tries to call 9-1-1, which is too busy to answer calls, and then her ex. In the end, she settles for her ex’s wife, who isn’t interested in listening to her stories.
Jackie has to leave the bathroom and figure out a new plan, which she does. She needs to show Pritcher something in her ex’s garage, which gets her into the house and to Amber, who could finally take her seriously.

The Rainmaker season 1, episode 5 also sees Rudy realize that Kelly is in the hospital. He decides to pay her a visit to be a friendly ear, but he doesn’t really do anything that could help her. I don’t blame her for thinking that he’s going to do more harm than good, but there is a hint of a friendship and maybe a relationship blossoming here.
The Rainmaker airs on Fridays at 10/9c on USA Network.
