Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox episode 2.

One thing is clear frorm the start of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox episode 2. Everyone wanted it to be Amanda Knox. Parts of her story didn’t sound right, and they were sure she was the one staging the scenes to make it look like a break-in.

However, Dr. Mignini and Monica Napoleoni do realize that a man has have been involved as well. The murder was of a sexual nature, so only a man would do that. It’s not surprising then that suspicion fell on both Amanda and Raffaele.

Not all the evidence points to Amanda Knox

It’s soon clear that not all of the evidence points to Amanda, and it’s not just the sexual element of the crime. There is a blood-stained item in the boys’ apartment downstairs, which leads to Meredith’s boyfriend and roommates pulled in for questioning.

Giacomo eventually shares that he gave Meredith keys to the apartment while they were away, as she was going in to check on the cat. It’s funny how they quickly point out some of the mistakes Amanda made with things she forgot, but they don’t put the same pressure on the boys. Even when the hair of a Black man is found in Meredith’s apartment, the police are still adamant that Amanda and Raffaele had something to do with it.

The police kept ignoring the evidence that didn’t match what they thought was right. They would try to fit everything they could into their idea. Some of them do try to find the Black man who plays basketball and goes by the name of The Baron, but it’s a futile attempt to find him.

Amanda is pulled back in for questioning without a translator in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox

After initially taking Amanda back to her apartment to look through the drawers, Amanda is pulled back in to questioning. This time it’s without the translator, which offers the police another chance to catch Amanda out.

Of course, Amanda trying to figure out how to lay everything out and explain it in Italian makes it look like she’s making up the night that Meredith died. They do eventually get a translator in, but it leads to an ambush. With a text to her boss saying “see you later” and being told that Raffaele took away her alibi, Amanda struggles with the feeling of betrayal and the stress of everything happening.

We know the translator is on the cops’ side, so when she starts to suggest that Amanda doesn’t remember what she did the night of the murder, she pushes it hard. She wants to force a confession out of Amanda, and the cops are more than willing to use violence to get it out of her.

With everyone shouting at her, it’s not surprising that she finally says, “It was Patrick.” As we know now, Amanda has been sued for slander by implicating Patrick Lumumba in the crime. He didn’t do it, but you can see from this setup that she said something to get people to stop shouting at her. This was the turning point for Amanda’s case, though, as not only did she blame it on Patrick, but she also implicated herself.

We head back to the events of that night, with Patrick telling Amanda she doesn’t need to work and her turning her phone off. Raffaele turned his off too, supporting the original story. With that, Amanda tells everyone that she remembered wrong and Patrick didn’t do it, but it’s too late. What she said can’t be unsaid, so she decides to write a letter.

We know the letter exists, and while she doesn’t outright recant her statement, the context of it makes it clear that the police twisted words and put the story in her head.

With all this, Amanda and Raffaele are arrested for murder, stating that Amanda confessed. Of course, the police covered up anything that connected evidence in the boys’ apartment, keeping everything contained to the girls’ place. With that, the evidence was discarded, making it clear that the police didn’t really care about getting the truth.

Amanda's mom finally gets to Italy, but it's too late. Her daughter is all over the news.

Once again, a bungled police investigation and the need to pin it on the easiest suspect makes it clear that Amanda was never given a fair chance. And of course, the publications were going to focus on what the police said not knowing what had actually happened.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox airs on Wednesdays on Hulu.
