The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox continues to give us a look at the case from Amanda’s perspective. The only times we step outside of her perspective is to hear form Dr. Mignini and Amanda’s mom, but most of the time, we look at the case through her eyes.
That includes the moment she’s told she has HIV. Amanda had a series of blood tests done while in prison, and one of those was an STI panel. She was told that she tested positive for HIV, and suddenly her life crumbled even more.

Yes, Amanda really was told she had HIV in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox
The story is true. According to Esquire, Amanda shared that she was told she had tested positive for HIV, and she needed to make a list of all her sexual partners. To be fair, if she had really tested positive for the virus, it is a smart move. However, we can tell from the world of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox that there was an ulterior motive to get her to write these names down.
However, Amanda’s first thoughts weren’t about other partners. They were something that we’d all likely think: “I was crying, thinking I cannot have children.”
In the series, it shows she had seven partners in Italy. This was immediately used against her, as she was shown by the media as a woman with an insatiable sexual appetite. If a woman was willing to sleep with so many people, what else was she willing to do? The publications quickly took to nicknaming her “Foxy Knoxy” and the smear campaign started.
This is a name that has stuck with her since. It has made it harder for her to step away from the trial that could have cost her her life.

Amanda didn’t really test positive for HIV
In the end, she was told that the results were a false positive. Why would they run the tests again? That’s never made sense to me, and I’m sure that it’s linked more to the ulterior motive more than anything else.
The Italian police needed something against her because they certainly didn’t have the evidence. Having the public turn on her was the way to do that, and once that happened, they could tell her that the HIV test was a false positive.
What was Amanda going to do about that at the time? There was little that she could do, and going against them wasn’t going to change the trauma from two weeks of believing that she was positive for HIV. The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox continues to show us the devastation of what a botched trial can do.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox airs on Wednesdays on Hulu.
