It’s been a while since we’ve seen Dante Torres in Chicago PD season 12. During a previous episode, Burgess told Cook that she didn’t know why Torres was off, but that he had taken leave. In Chicago PD season 12, episode 18, we finally got some details, and Torres isn’t doing that great.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Chicago PD season 12, episode 18.

As Voight took a case to Intelligence on the orders of Ried, Torres turned up with his arm in a sling. He explained that he injured it while boxing, and Voight put him on desk duty. Well, he didn’t stay on desk duty, and in the middle of a chase, he ended up crashing his car.

This led to Voight sending him home, which is where Reid caught up with him and gave him a mission of his own. Fortunately, Torres had the smart mind to call Voight when he got some information that would help their case. Voight took it from there, but not before he got some information from Torres about what’s going on.

Torres is struggling with insomnia in Chicago PD

It turns out that Torres has suffered from insomnia for some time now. It’s something he suffered from when younger, but he managed to find a way to beat it. However, it’s back, and this time, he’s struggling with it. He’s been boxing every night just to tire himself out to the point where he falls over with exhaustion.

However, this is all taking its toll mentally. Sleep deprivation is used as torture for a reason, and it’s because the whole mind suffers. Anyone who has ever suffered from insomnia will be able to empathize with Torres about the way it feels — you don’t feel like your body is your own.

Bottling something like this up is never a good thing, and Torres has finally turned to Voight for some support. This will at least give him a chance to heal, but he needs to get to the bottom of the cause of the insomnia. After all, there’s usually a reason, especially for it to come back.

This could be linked to two major Torres storylines recently. He is grieving the loss of Gloria, and shortly after that, he went undercover at a juvenile detention center he knew a little too well. While in there, the door closed, and he ended up panicking. It’s likely this event that is causing his insomnia, as it’s likely reignited his trauma, leading to a PTSD response. But by talking about it to Voight, he can work on getting the mental help that he needs to get his career and his life back on track.

Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
