It’s a pleasant surprise for fans of Watson as the CBS show is not only moving to a new night but coming back much sooner than expected!
One of the pleasant surprises of the 2024-25 season was Watson. The newest take on Sherlock Holmes took a unique approach, opening with John Watson (Morris Chestnut) seeing Holmes die fighting Professor Moriarty. Inheriting Holmes’ great wealth, Watson opened a clinic where he and a batch of maverick doctors use deductive methods to solve medical mysteries.
The series clicked as a mix of medical drama and mystery procedural with some intriguing characters and Chestnut terrific in the lead role. There were also long-running subplots, including Watson targeted by a still-alive Moriarty (Randall Park), still making moves against Watson and his allies.
The show was a big success for CBS, earning a second season and a wild finale of Watson going to extreme measures to defeat Moriarty. The idea was to hold the show's second season off until midseason, allowing CBS to do their usual huge fall schedule releases and then run through a 13-episode second season.
Instead, CBS has made a huge move with the series that fans will undoubtedly love!

When does Watson season 2 premiere?
CBS just released their 2025 fall TV premiere dates, and among the bigger surprises is that rather than midseason, Watson season 2 premieres Monday, Oct. 13 at 10/9c. It will follow The Neighborhood, the new comedy DMV, and FBI season 8.
The time slot was originally set for the new FBI: CIA spinoff. However, that show is now being held back amid reports of some creative issues. Aside from Tom Ellis, no cast has been announced for it and Warren Leight is replacing David Hudgins as the showrunner. That made it harder for the series to get production underway to make an October premiere date.
Thus, Watson will be taking the place of FBI: CIA and will likely be extending its episode count. It’s unexpected, but also shows CBS has faith in the show to put it in a prime slot following FBI. Season 2 will no doubt raise the stakes in the cases, the character interactions and more to build up its audience. Off that, moving to Mondays is also a good move as it’ll get more eyes on the show than on Sunday nights and anchor a successful night for CBS.
So, fans of Watson can be happy to see it returning much sooner than planned, and the sophomore season of the hit drama should be even better!
