The first trailer for Matlock season 2 promises we won’t wait long to solve the season 1 cliffhanger and a stunning new direction for the series!
Matlock has always relied on twisting what the audience expects. That was proven in the pilot, which revealed Matty Matlock (Kathy Bates) was secretly a rich woman working inside the law firm of Jacobson & Moore to find out who had suppressed files that would have proven opioids were addictive, which may have saved the life of Matty’s addict daughter.
The show kept up the twists, such as Matty’s boss, Olympia (Skye P. Marshal), figuring out Matty’s secret and becoming an ally. That set up the Matlock season 1 finale as Olympia discovered it was her ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), son of firm boss, Senior (Beau Bridges), who buried the files to save his father. He begged Olympia not to reveal the truth.
That left Olympia in a tough place and the first trailer shows her choice may tear her and Matty apart!
What does Olympia decide in Matlock season 2?
Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman had already teased to TVLine that:
"You find out very quickly what Olympia and Julian decided in the bank, and what that means for Matty. I will just tease that Matty is not the only person in control this year; the fact that Olympia, at times, has more information than Matty becomes significant.”
The trailer only confirms Snyder’s words as Matty slowly realizes Olympia has the file but isn’t going to release it. Olympia is defending herself on how she doesn’t want to put the father of her children in jail and is keeping the file for leverage, with Matty coldly replying, "You only need leverage if we’re on opposite sides.”
The trailer pushes the tension as Julian wants Olympia to shred the file, which would be an even bigger crime. Matty is threatening to go to the newspapers, with Olympia firing back that she has no proof, while she’s been compiling a list of federal crimes Matty has committed. In other words, Matty's shady actions in the first season are coming back to haunt her.

During all this, the pair has to put on a show of working together on cases, even as they seem set to go to war with each other. It also hints that Olympia may have the power, although Matty could have her own plan. It’s all summed up by the text of “allies” turning into “all lies.”
Thus, Matlock season 2 is going to raise the stakes big time and set Matlock and Olympia on a collision course that could change the entire series, making it a wild ride for viewers.
Matlock season 2 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on CBS, before moving to Thursdays at 9/8c.
