While 911: Nashville spent weeks focusing on the hacker storyline, there was a personal one still running in the background. Blue was dealing with the knowledge that his mom needed surgery, but she didn’t have money for it. Everything remained a secret until 911: Nashville season 1 episode 9.

The episode picked up with Blue’s ceremony, as he became Nashville’s latest firefighter. It’s a huge moment for family and friends, so understandably Dixie was there to celebrate with her son. However, this was just after learning from her doctor that her polyps were growing, and there was a threat of hermoarrge.

What happened to Dixie on 911: Nashville?

During the celebratory moments, Blue introduced Dixie to Taylor, sharing that Taylor is also a singer. This led to Taylor and Dixie singing a duet, which kicks thinks off for Dixie’s throat. As she starts coughing, blood comes up, and it leads to her collapsing.

Naturally, Blue and Don were worried. So were others at the firehouse, and they made sure to rush Dixie straight to the hospital to have tests run.

The good news is that the bleeding was superficial, so she’s allowed to go home. Why would the doctors send her home when she collapsed? Well, she faints at the sight of blood, including her own, so that’s all that was.

Blue asks his dad for a loan to help his mom

Before Dixie came out of her tests, Blue had already opened up to his dad, sharing that his mom needs a surgery that she can’t afford. The surgery will cost $45,000, and he would like a loan that he can pay off bi-weekly.

As Don gets the full story, he makes a decision to pay for the surgery, but it won’t be a loan. He wants to pay for it outright, which understandably angers Blythe. She can’t understand the hold Dixie has on Don, but Don makes it clear that while he has shared trauma with Dixie, Blythe is the one who saved him, and she will always be his heart.

The plot thickens, though. After a call with a woman who lied through her teeth after killing her husband, Blue realizes that the timing of Dixie’s coughing and bleeding was too perfect. After a confrontation, Dixie admits that she did fake the blood and situation, but there is still a risk of losing her voice if the polyps are able to grow.

Once he hears the truth, Blue is apologetic and feels guilty for calling her out, but it’s clear manipulation. This poor boy has been stuck with an emotionally abusive and toxic mother, and he can’t see it.

911: Nashville airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC and streams the following day on Hulu.
