The trailer for On Call season 1 included a surprise cast member. Chicago Fire fans were excited to see Monica Raymund in the series.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from the On Call series premiere
We met Raymund’s character Officer Maria Delgado in the opening minutes of the first episode. She pulls a guy over, noting that it is someone she knows. She knows that he has been in prison before, and she gets some vibes from him based on the other people in the vehicle.
On Call quickly shows the dangers of working in the police force
Sadly, Raymund’s character doesn’t last long in the series. Officer Delgado is shot by the passenger in the back of the car, with the bullet hitting her neck. It’s not an instant death, though, as she is able to radio through to say that she is down. She is left bleeding out in the street, with someone across the road from her filming it on a cell phone. Then we cut to a memorial to note that she did die in the line of duty.
The death gives us a look at the dangers of police work. Of course, it’s something that Troian Bellisario’s character, Officer Traci Harmon, focuses on. She knows that she could be killed at any point, and she wants to make sure her rookie, Alex Diaz, is aware of surroundings and locations at all times to be able to make a call when needed.
Harmon also wants to get to the bottom of the murder. She wants to bring the culprit to justice, although she knows that it’s a dangerous task. It sounds like Harmon and Delgado were close friends.
There is some victim blaming happening within the episode, as well. One of the new rookies points out that Delgado should have called in for backup when she made the call to get out of the car. It was clear that it was a bad situation. That rookie wasn’t there, though. How would he know? And we learn early on that there are some serious budget cuts and there were only three in Diaz’s graduating class. It’s not like there are a lot of police officers to go around.
On Call is now available to stream in full on Prime Video.
