Why is Shane pretending to be the son of Dr. Dulles in The Hunting Party (or is he)?

Shane Florence isn't the son of Dr. Dulles after all in The Hunting Party. At least, that's what the show wants us to believe right now.

The latest episode of The Hunting Party confirmed that Shane isn’t the son of Dr. Dulles. I always say “that’s what the show wants us to believe, though.” There are all sorts of ways that this storyline could play out.

Caution: This post contains some SPOILERS for The Hunting Party season 1, episode 7.

At the end of episode 6, Shane left Dr. Dulles and a young woman walked up to the nurse to find out who he is. We learned that Dr. Dulles doesn’t have a son, and at the start of episode7, Shane was escorted out of the facility. The woman followed him around, but Shane was smart enough to know that there was a tail on him.

On top of that, he knew that she is a lawyer. So, that means he’s done his research, and it leads to the question of whether Shane is or isn’t the son of Dr. Dulles.

Is Shane the secret son of Dr. Dulles in The Hunting Party?

Shane did say that he could explain the situation, and he seemed genuine. If he wasn’t actually the man’s son, he wouldn’t have visited as often. He would have known that there was potential family out there, and he only had a limited amount of time. The fact that he wasn’t surprised that he was caught in a lie suggests that he can already fully explain it.

Is it possible that he is Dr. Dulles’s son, but the family doesn’t know about him? I don’t put it past anyone to have an affair and a secret love child. Shane and the real daughter are about the same age, which could mean that Dulles had an affair and then up and left them after his daughter was born. It’s possible that Shane found out when he was older, leading to him wanting to work where his dad worked to get to know the man.

This would explain why he could explain the situation, and why he seemed so genuine about Dulles being his dad. It would also explain why he was so focused on keeping his private life and his work life separate, since nobody knows that Shane and Dulles were potentially related.

Does Shane want to know more about The Pit?

The alternate theory is that Shane simply wants to know more about The Pit. He may want to know more about the experiments, or he may have been sent to find out how much Dulles knows. It’s clear that the attack on The Pit was much bigger and more organized than it initially seemed.

Is it possible that Shane ended up working as a prison officer via whoever took out The Pit? Was he supposed to purposely get Dr. Dulles? Maybe he realized that he was on he wrong side of science, and he has actually wanted to protect Dulles considering his current mental state.

I honestly think that this is just too obvious of a storyline, though. The idea that he wanted to get to know his dad seems a little more personal and different compared to so many other conspiracy shows, so I hope The Hunting Party has really thought all this through. Yes, the long-lost brother trope is overdone, but that’s usually a brother coming in for a main character. This time, it’s the other way around, and I would love to see that being done.

The Hunting Party airs on Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
