The Will Trent season 3 teaser art created major suspense about the show from the get-go. The slogan reads, “there’s a time to cross the line”. If you’ve been following the character development of Will Trent in the show, you know that he never wavers on his stance between right and wrong. He doesn’t leave any room for grey area.

The riskiest move Will Trent made was making Deion a CI, without informing his mother, in order to save him from a hefty prison sentence. This was actually a big deal for Trent, because it involves a little—or maybe not so little—white lie, and Will Trent never shies from the truth. He maintains high expectations for himself as a GBI agent.

Fans are now left wondering, what line is Will going to cross? Are we ever going to be able to forgive him for arresting Angie in season 2? And finally, will we get to meet more of Will Trent’s biological family?

What we know so far about Will Trent's bio family

In Will Trent season 1, all we know of Will’s family is that he grew up around Angie, his first (and possible only) love, and he was briefly cared for by his boss, Amanda, who found him as an infant. Amanda acts as a mother figure to both Will and Angie, because she is honest enough to confront them when they make mistakes, and compassionate enough to understand when they need grace in their jobs. In the show, viewers can also see that Amanda is on-edge emotionally whenever Will and Angie face danger on the job.

In Will Trent season 2, we meet Will’s uncle, Antonio, who heals some of those familial wounds that Trent has buried for what seems like decades. Antonio always seems to be there when Will is struggling and gets to witness the side of Will that most people in his inner circle don’t see. Antonio even helps Will overcome his guilt over his role in the night his foster mother was killed.  Finally, Antonio takes Trent to Puerto Rico, helping him connect with his ancestral roots in a way he was never able to experience as a child.

Aside from an uncle, a motherly boss, and an estranged best friend/ex-girlfriend, Will has other chosen family in the series. There’s Nico, Will’s roommate and dogsitter; Betty, his loveable dog; and Rafael, Will’s ex-foster brother, who also brings some trouble inWill Trent, season 3. Will has quite a few individuals who deeply care about him despite flaws in his ability to connect emotionally. Still, fans are curious about whether we will meet more of his biological family in Will Trent, season 4.

The Will Trent season 3 finale could be a set up for more clues

No one was prepared for the abrupt way Will Trent, season 3 ended! Angie is pregnant (by her new beau), the series reveals Will’s biological father (who hasn’t left a great first impression), and Ormewood and Amanda are facing serious health crises.

According to TVLine, the executive producers of the show are purposefully exploring the possibility of Will meeting multiple new biological family members in Will Trent season 4. Can fans expect Will to do so readily, or will there be some hesitation while so much is going on with the people he currently considers his family (i.e. Amanda, Angie, and maybe even Ormewood)?

Will Trent and his dad leave things off in season 3 with an awkward invitation to dinner with Will’s dad and his step-mom. Trent already struggles with how to socialize in these kinds of settings, so fans can probably expect this moment to be memorable in one of two ways: extremely awkward or (hopefully) a pleasant surprise. Could there also be some passive aggression from resentment that Will still holds against his father?

Book fans, be prepared for more twists in Will Trent season 4

The Will Trent season 3 finale diverges a bit from the book series by Karin Slaughter, especially in terms of Will’s biological father. Showrunner, Liz Heldens, also shared that Will Trent’s father was originally his mother’s murderer, James Ulster. When asked about the reason for the change, Heldens responded,

"It seemed like, to make that guy his father was kind of like… [shrugs]. And so we thought, well, let’s just do something completely different and go in a completely different direction, make him law enforcement, and make him a different kind of cop than Will is. It seemed like creating a character with a little bit more gray area than James Ulster, who was just a really bad guy…”

As a fan of the show, I agree with the change. There is already so much trauma, and it would feel like adding insult to injury for Will. He may never be able to have a positive relationship with the man who killed his mother, but he could have a decent relationship with another cop who understands his life and who had no knowledge about Will.

Unfortunately, in the real world, adopted families are complicated and there is not always a happy ending for those seeking to meet biological family members. But for Will, many fans probably want to see some good come into his life, especially fans who were rooting for Angie and Will to make it.

Will Trent season 4 returns in 2026 on ABC and is set to stream on Hulu.
