Melinda Hsu-Taylor and Noga Landau are two of the creatives behind The CW’s Nancy Drew. They share a little more about adding ghosts to the story.

One thing The CW’s Nancy Drew has that no other iteration does is the supernatural. While there seemed to be mentions of ghosts in the books, it always turned out to be something scientific. While at NYCC 2019, showrunner and EP Melinda Hsu-Taylor and EP Noga Landau discussed why they added in the supernatural.

It turns out that it’s because in the original books it just always seemed like there was something otherworldly about the story. Landau explains that she always felt that presence and it was important to add it into their TV series, instead of just having it as something that could be explained away by science. It adds another element to the mystery aspect of the show.

However, this isn’t going to feel like a completely new Nancy Drew. The character is the one we’ve come to know and love over the years. Fans of the books and video games will certainly spot a few Easter eggs along the way, although the stories and the mysteries are different.

Unlike many other TV shows where the characters clearly have some sort of backstory together or have been friends for years, that’s not the case in Nancy Drew. A few of the characters have known each other (and even hated each other) but there are others that are new to the town. The Drew Crew forms based on a mystery and their friendships are going to develop. They’ll get to know each other as we get to know them.

Apart from the supernatural aspects, what makes this Nancy Drew different to all the other iterations? It’s to do with the lead character. Other versions have tried to make our lead character older or they’ve made her too perfect. This series is dialing things back. Nancy is a teenager and she certainly has her flaws, making her more relatable to others.

"“She’s an imperfect teenager…it’s fascinating that we’ve started Nancy in this place where she’s so the opposite of what she wants to be at this moment in [her] life…Her life becomes about what happens to her because she’s stuck.”— Melinda Hsu-Taylor"
