Prodigal Son is building out its ensemble, casting Scandal actor Raymond Lee to play the love interest of Malcolm’s sister Ainsley.

As Prodigal Son continues to draw TV crime drama fans to FOX, the series has cast a new and potentially interesting character who will further flesh out its world.

Raymond Lee has been hired to play Jin, who’s the boyfriend of Malcolm’s (Tom Payne) sister Ainsley Whitly (Halston Sage). According to Deadline, his role is recurring so he’ll appear in more than one episode.

Lee will make his first appearance just before Halloween. His character debuts in the Oct. 28 installment, “The Surgeon,” where Ainsley is determined to interview the infamous serial killer of the same name—who is also her father.

Fans will have to wait until then to see what role Jin plays in the episode, and the episodes going forward, but hopefully he’ll be supportive of Ainsley as she chases the story that she might regret going after.

He could wind up being very important since FOX’s official description of “The Surgeon” says that both Malcolm and Jessica (Bellamy Young) try to stop Ainsley from getting her interview.

More: What are the chances for Prodigal Son Season 2?

Raymond Lee recently had a series regular role playing Duc Bayer-Boatwright in Alan Ball’s short-lived but critically acclaimed HBO drama Here and Now. His character was the adopted son of Greg (Tim Robbins) and Audrey (Holly Hunter). You can watch a clip of him from that series below.

Crime drama fans will recognize him as James Chen in the Magnum P.I. episode “Six Paintings, One Frame” from the first season. He also appeared in two episodes of Scandal as Nelson Parker.

Lee is an interesting addition. And with all the Whitly family drama on the show, it’s important that Prodigal Son is establishing relationships outside of the family dynamic.

The characters will need other people to turn to, and fans can learn more about them by how they interact with those closest to them, too. Presuming that Jin doesn’t somehow meet a terrible end—which is possible on this show—his presence could be an opportunity to flesh out Ainsley beyond just being Malcolm’s sister, and he’ll show viewers what she’s like when she’s not dealing with her family.

Beyond that, the more of a universe the show can build, the better it will be as it aims for FOX to pick it up for a second season. While its recent green light for a full first season was a good sign, a second is still not confirmed. So the more we know, the more we’ll want to know, and it starts with adding new characters like Jin.
