Stumptown ratings climbed up slightly on Nov. 3 in the show’s first airing after competing with the World Series. See the latest Stumptown numbers.

Stumptown ratings lifted slightly this week, but the ABC series continued to struggle to get over the 3 million viewer mark.

Wednesday’s episode “Dex, Drugs and Rock & Roll” teased TV crime drama fans with a look into Dex Parios’ (Cobie Smulders) past, when her ex-girlfriend came to Portland and tried to restart their old relationship.

It was also the show’s first outing after it had gone head-to-head with playoff baseball, so the episode picked up some extra viewers. 2.83 million people watched it live.

That’s up incrementally from the past Wednesday’s 2.67 million (+0.16, or 160,000).

Any gain is good for Stumptown, which is facing an uphill battle when it comes to its live audience. Wednesday’s installment was the third episode that reached less than 3 million viewers.

The Cobie Smulders-led series is one of the least-watched broadcast TV series on Wednesday nights, ranking 12th out of 15 programs in total viewers for the second week in a row.

Only its lead-in, the sitcom Single Parents, and The CW’s teen dramas Nancy Drew and Riverdale have smaller audiences tuning in.

Even in the 10 p.m. time period, Stumptown is a very clear last; it’s roughly a million viewers behind the more established SWAT and almost four million eyeballs behind time slot winner Chicago PD.

Stumptown is also underperforming in the adults 18-49 key demographic. This week’s episode earned a 0.5 share, which tied the show for 12th place in that group as well.

That adds up to a precarious picture for the hugely promoted series. It’s not garnering a lot of live viewers, and it’s not appealing to the age range that networks and advertisers are looking for. Stumptown is almost certainly picking up eyeballs on DVR and streaming, but live numbers still carry a lot of weight, because of advertising.

The good news for fans is that ABC already ordered a full first season awhile back, so the series clearly has some network support and shouldn’t be going off the air soon. But Stumptown ratings need to pick up if it wants to be competitive—and guarantee a Season 2.
