The Israeli crime drama Queens is being remade for the United States by Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and Endemol Shine.

A popular Israeli TV crime drama is coming to the United States thanks to Gal Gadot and production company Endemol Shine. Queens, which is set to premiere its second season in Israel sometime in 2020, is getting an American remake courtesy of the Wonder Woman actress.

According to Deadline, Queens (Malkot in Israel) is the story of a group of women whose men have all been murdered by a rival crime syndicate. With the men gone, they must come together in order to survive what comes their way.

What the women realize, however, is that even though they may not have chosen to be in the criminal life, they have a chance to gain control of their destiny. For the first time in their lives, these women can respond to the world they live in. Of course, the only way they will be able to continue doing so is to stay alive.

Gail Zaid of Endemol Shine Israel described the series as “a brilliant story of female empowerment, with comic undertones and larger-than-life, eccentric women at its heart.”

The Queens remake for the U.S. will have Gadot and her husband Jaron Varsano executive producing under their Pilot Wave banner.

It’s unknown whether or not Gadot will have any involvement with the show as an actress.

The couple issued a statement of their own this week, saying, “These complex characters are captivating, delightfully funny and emotional. It is rare to find content that conveys characters in such a truthful way, while mirroring society. We are looking forward to bringing their story to the world and working with the Endemol Shine team on this project.”

Endemol Shine and Gadot are reportedly aiming to bring the remake to the American market in 2020. Since that’s also when Queens will air its second season in Israel, the duo could wait until after the original series wraps its next run before trying to sell the remake to U.S. networks.

It will be interesting to see how Queens is given a makeover for a new set of viewers in a different culture. Gadot is known worldwide for playing the epitome of a strong woman, so what touch will she bring to a series that is fundamentally about strong women making their own way in a male-dominated environment?
