NBC has given a script commitment to Fallback, an hourlong crime drama with a sci-fi element mixed in.

NBC has green-lighted a script commitment to Fallback and new crime drama that mixes in a sci-fi element. According to Deadline, Fallback will revolve around an off-the-books task force that is sent in to solve the world’s most dangerous and difficult crimes in a “top secret” government program. With the series also having sci-fi elements mixed in, one could reasonably expect some of the cases to dabble a bit in the X-Files realm.

The show is being created by Martin Gero and Brendan Gall, the men behind NBC’s other successful crime drama Blindspot. With a successful show already on the primetime lineup, it may have been wise for NBC to take a chance on Galla and Gero’s Fallback.

Both Gero and Gall will serve as executive producers of Fallback, with Gero’s Quinn’s House producing the series in association with Warner Bros. TV. Quinn’s House has several dramas currently on order on The CW, Midnighters and Kung Fu, and another, The Service, that also received a script commitment for with penalty at FOX through writer Drew Lindo (Fallback’s commitment also contains a penalty).

NBC’s crime drama block is already being held steadfast by Law and Order: SVU, The Blacklist, and the Chicago series (Med, Fire, PD), but with new drama Bluff City Law looking more-and-more likely to meet the cancellation ax after its first season, a spot will be open for Fallback to prove its worth to the schedule.

From the sound of it, Fallback could be a nice addition to NBC’s crime drama block, especially given the sci-fi ting the series will have. It’s an interesting series, for sure, and we’ll have to wait and see if Fallback can become a regular on NBC’s schedule.
