FanSided 250: TV crime dramas overlooked and underrated
By Cody Schultz
Despite their standing as one of television’s most popular and longest running genre programs, TV crime dramas were surprisingly shut out of the 2019 FanSided 250.
Every year, the FanSided 250 strives to honor the hottest, most buzz-worthy fanbases in entertainment and sports and 2019 was quite the banner year for television. This year, an impressive 32 television fandoms managed to crack the FanSided 250. Unfortunately, TV crime dramas were left out in the cold with not a single crime drama highlighted among the annual rankings.
Of the 32 television fandoms featured on the list, the closest connection to the TV crime drama genre is NBC’s police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine . Even it couldn’t crack the Top 200, though, with the series coming in at No. 212 overall, twenty-fifth overall among TV fandoms.

The exclusion of TV crime dramas from this year’s FanSided 250 ranking is quite glaring given the genre’s continued popularity among viewers, who often tune in by the millions to join their favorite TV detectives as they attempt to crack their latest cases.
16 seasons into its run, NCIS continues to rank as one of the most-watched series on all of television thanks to the support from its multi-generational fans. These same fans have helped CBS build a television empire spanning multiple series which each continue to draw solid weekly audiences and remain favorites among viewers.
Need further proof of the genre’s popularity? Look no further than to the success of CBS’s Friday night crime drama slate of Hawaii Five-0, Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods which continue to defy the expectations with the help of their loyal fans. Many have tried, but none have found the same level of success CBS has had with its Friday crime dramas which routinely lead CBS to victory on a night once thought to where shows went to die.
Still not convinced that the genre has some of the most loyal and passionate fans? Look no further than to NBC’s Law and Order: SVU. With the help of its loyal fandom, Law and Order: SVU has secured the title of longest running scripted drama with 21 seasons under its belt and no end date in sight. If not for the passion of the show’s fans, Law & Order: SVU could have never managed to achieve such a monumental feat.
While perhaps not as flashy as superheroes and epic fantasy series filled with dragons, there is no denying TV crime dramas remain a favorite among fans and it’s a shame the genre continues to be overlooked and under-appreciated. We can only hope 2020’s FanSided 250 will show the genre the recognition it deserves in honoring a few of the many TV crime dramas fans can’t get enough of.
