Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector (Hulu)

This series doesn’t premiere on NBC until Jan. 10, but Hulu subscribers can watch a sneak peek starting today! Lincoln Rhyme is one of two TV crime dramas getting an early look on Hulu (the other being FOX‘s newcomer Deputy).

Lincoln Rhyme: The Hunt for the Bone Collector is a TV adaptation of Jeffrey Deaver’s hit crime thriller The Bone Collector, and the first for the small screen (it was previously a movie in 1999 starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie). Russell Hornsby (Lincoln Heights) takes over Washington’s role as the title character, while Arielle Kebbel and Michael Imperioli co-star.

Hornsby has been an undervalued actor since his starring role in ESPN‘s short-lived NFL drama Playmakers, so it’ll be interesting to see how he leads this show. Will it grip audiences and make them want to chase down the serial killer? Decide for yourself by streaming it early.

Alaska PD (A&E, 10:00 p.m. ET/PT)

A&E is continuing to expand its true crime TV offerings by premiering Alaska PD, which purports to show viewers what it’s like as a police officer in the freezing wilderness, in a state that’s known for having far fewer cops than they need.

This isn’t the first TV series to focus on Alaska’s law enforcement officers—National Geographic had Alaska State Troopers—but A&E has a blueprint down pat now for true crime shows thanks to Live PD and its multitude of spinoffs. So what will this series show audiences that we haven’t seen before? And how long until someone almost gets eaten by a bear? It may just come up, at least if you look at the Alaska PD trailer.

The First 48 (A&E, 8:00 p.m. ET/PT)

Speaking of A&E, the network’s longest-running true crime TV show returns for another season tonight. The First 48 season 19 continues to follow homicide detectives around the country in the first two days of their investigations, while a ticking clock pops up periodically to remind viewers of how much time has passed.

While newer shows have arrived with different stories and fresher concepts, The First 48 is still a series that holds up and the network is using New Year’s Day to air an “anniversary special” that’s going to commemorate the show being on the air for a decade and a half. Detectives who’ve been featured on the show will participate in interviews looking back on past episodes.

That makes this a great starting point for new viewers, too, because you can familiarize yourself with the cast and learn about some of their previous cases. Once you get started, chances are that you’ll end up doing a The First 48 binge-watch sooner rather than later.
