Criminal Minds Season 15 premieres tonight. For it’s New Year’s Resolution in 2020, it needs to make sure it doesn’t hold back.

Throughout this month, we’ve looked at the New Year’s Resolutions TV crime dramas need to work. The shows we’ve focused on so far are those that are in the middle of current seasons. Today, we’re looking at Criminal Minds, tying in with the premiere of the final season.

It’s going to be a weird New Year’s Resolution, to be honest. After all, the season hasn’t premiered yet. We have no idea what the writers have to offer, but that doesn’t stop us all from having our wishes. And one of those wishes is where my New Year’s Resolution for the show comes in.

The show: Criminal Minds

The resolution: Not to hold back

Why it needs to be made: It’s important for any TV show to go out on a high. Criminal Minds has been given that chance by getting a final season renewal from CBS during the 2018-2019 season. On top of that, the show was given just 10 episodes. It would be enough to wrap up storylines and make sure the BAU had one great final case.

There’s going to be a mixture of a procedural element and a serialized element. That suggests there will be the odd cases of the week, but there’s also the ongoing case involving The Chameleon, the “Joker to Rossi’s Batman.”

Yet, there are so many other characters to focus on. JJ revealed her feelings for Reid during Rossi’s wedding, and there are various things happening in the lives of many other characters. We’re left with wishes for returning characters, whether they can only happen through flashbacks/visions or the characters could return in the flesh.

With all this in mind, it would easy to fizzle out trying to cover all bases. However, with the time to plan and knowledge that the show only had 10 episodes, there’s hope that this series will end with a bang. The writers better not have been afraid to take risks, better not have held back.

This is a show that managed to shock and awe us. It gave us a TV crime drama that we hadn’t seen before it, and there aren’t many others out there that are willing to touch on some of the darkest sides of humanity while explaining the psychology behind them. Go out the way it came in; constantly impressing us.
