Danny and Steve had a more personal storyline throughout Hawaii Five-0, as they focused on Charlie being bullied. It turned into a heartfelt storyline.
Hawaii Five-0 often has this way of surprising us, especially when it comes to the personal storylines. In Season 10, Episode 13, Danny and Steve brought the heartfelt moments, as they attempted to solve the issue of Charlie being bullied in school. They needed to talk to the parents of the bully, bringing the reminder that kids aren’t just mean for the sake of it.
After pulling over the bully’s father, Danny and Steve learn that the bully’s parents are going through a divorce. Naturally, that has a knock-on effect on this kid because the divorce isn’t an amicable one. There are a lot of expensive lawyers involved.
Out of everyone, Danny understands that. He’s divorced from Charlie’s mom, and it certainly wasn’t an easy divorce. Yet, the two try hard to co-parent, with Steve as a backup, someone like an uncle to Charlie.

What could have been an episode with two parents arguing and being worse than the children turned into something heartfelt and important. It served as a reminder that kids don’t bully for the sake of it. That attitude stems from something, whether it’s learned or it’s the children lashing out due to a difficult home life. In Hawaii Five-0 Season 10, Episode 13, it was the troubled home life.
As soon as Danny learned about the divorce, he took a step back. He was willing to talk it out with the father, which Steve was quick to point out that the kids could do soon.
But Hawaii Five-0 didn’t stop there. After all, this wasn’t really about the kids. This was an episode for the two fathers. It was a chance for Danny to offer the tips he’d picked up during his divorce. He had just one piece of advice: don’t undermine the other parent in front of the child.
Honestly, this is advice all parents should take. It doesn’t just apply during divorce. There’s no need to agree, but undermining a parent will show that there’s no respect. That attitude is learned by children, leading to them undermining their peers in school.
It’s easy to say yes when the other parent says no. After all, it makes one the “good” parent. When divorced, that can seem even better, as you get the children on your side. But really, you’re teaching children some very bad habits, which they’ll continue to develop as they get older and treat their own partners in the same way.
Bravo, Hawaii Five-0, for reminding everyone these lessons.
