New Year’s Resolutions: Murdoch Mysteries at 200
Murdoch Mysteries’ 200th episode will air tonight. What does the show need to do to make the most of this episode? Here’s its New Year’s Resolution.
I’m doing something a little different for the New Year’s Resolutions post today. Jan. 13 marks the airing of the 200th episode of Murdoch Mysteries, something that 150 or so episodes ago, we never thought we’d get. While it’s all written, filmed, and ready for us, there is a big wish for the episode.
It needs to be memorable. I’m sure it will be, but it needs to deliver on the heart of the story. Don’t do things for the sake of standing out, but bring everything that has been special on Murdoch Mysteries over the last few years.
The show: Murdoch Mysteries
The resolution: Keep the heart in Episode 200
Why it needs to be made: Milestone episodes need to be celebrated. That’s especially the case when it comes to a show celebrating 200 episodes. Very few shows get to this point, even in the past.

Murdoch Mysteries never expected to get to this point. Peter Mitchell, the showrunner of the series, thought that he was entering the series to close it down as it entered the fifth season. There were many who thought this would be the end, but with a change of network and some revitalization, the show was renewed for a sixth, a seventh, and many more seasons.
We’re not into Season 13, and there are now no signs of the Canadian period crime drama slowing down. For one, I’m certainly not complaining!
When it comes to the 200th episode, it needs to capture the heart of the series. This is what makes Murdoch Mysteries stand out among a lead character who is a man way ahead of his time. The connection between the characters has helped the show remain popular, kept us needing to see more. We end up rooting for our favorites.
The silliness to the show brings the heart to the series. It adds a layer of fun, helping the characters develop and make the crime drama stand out. After all, how many crime dramas want to add some light humor throughout? Even with some of the darkest storylines, there’s comedic relief in silly little ways.
Once the 200th episode is done, Murdoch Mysteries will need to keep the strong writing and production going. There are seven episodes left of the season. Give us something shocking and wild.
