With the success of the Hawaii Five-0/Magnum PI crossover earlier this month, there’s only one New Year’s Resolution for any Friday night TV crime drama.

Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI finally got the chance to cross over at the start of the month. It was everything we ever dreamed of, even with the continuity error. And now there’s only one New Year’s Resolution for the any Friday TV crime drama.

And by any, we’re mostly talking about the CBS reboot shows. It’s about Hawaii Five-0Magnum PI, and MacGyver, which can all realistically crossover due to creative team, location, and already crossing over.

The show: The Friday night CBS reboot shows

The resolution: To do more crossovers

Why it should be made: There’s no doubt that crossover events have become highly anticipated. When done right, they pull in new audiences, become exciting movie events, and offer more development for all characters and the universe as a whole. We now know the crossover events work with every CBS TV crime drama reboot.

More from Hawaii Five-0 News

In the past, Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver have crossed over. It was a popular event that was done right. This wasn’t just for the sake of crossing over or purely for views, but was a way to connect the storylines and offer a deeper crime to uncover.

The same happened with Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. There was the chance for characters to offer advice to each other; advice they’d never get without the crossover happening. We got to see distinct personalities in leadership connected and certainly not always get along.

But why does it need to happen again? Friendships are often forged in the crossovers, friendships that we could often see continuing. I could imagine Tani, Quinn, and Higgins getting along and heading out for beers after cases in the real world. They’d be great friends, discussing their recent cases, offering words of advice to deal with the men, and much more. Crossovers give us the chance to see that.

“Desperate Measures” – When Junior (Beulah Koale) is kidnapped as leverage to retrieve the stolen list of undercover CIA agents, and most of Five-0 is rounded up by the CIA to prevent them from interfering, Tani (Meaghan Rath) and Quinn (Katrina Law) ask Magnum and Higgins for their help, on MAGNUM P.I., Friday, Jan. 3 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. However, these crossovers have to be done right. The One Chicago shows tend to have someone from each of the shows pop up now and again. They’re there to help push a particular storyline forward or just because the firefighters are in Med for some reason. Yet, they don’t take from the story and just create something that feels realistic for that setting.

Then there are the big movie events. We look forward to these, especially after the 2019 event where it felt like a real three-hour crossover with every episode blending in with another.

Each Friday night TV drama could take a leaf out of One Chicago’s book. Don’t do too many crossovers, but make them an annual thing we can look forward to. Offer just one character popping up for an assist now and then.

It’s going to be hard, right now. MacGyver airs in the midseason and is putting Magnum PI on the bench. Meanwhile, Magnum PI is on shaky ground. It’s possible that one or more may be canceled, which makes the crossover topic moot, but if all are renewed, we could see some excellent storylines from utilizing the combination of the universe.

Plus, there was a ratings boost to both shows in January. It’s clear that viewers are intrigued by the storylines.
