There’s a new TV crime drama in town. Tommy premieres on CBS tonight, and here’s all you need to make sure you don’t miss a beat.

Thought we had enough TV crime dramas around at the moment? As if! There is always more room for new dramas, and the newest on the market is Tommy. The CBS drama premieres tonight, and here’s how to make sure you don’t miss a beat.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock or avoiding CBS for whatever reason, you already know all about Tommy. This is one of the most heavily promoted shows on the network right now. There are some promos I like and some that I don’t for various reasons, but they all serve as a reminder that this is a series about a woman becoming the first Chief of Police in LA.

And not just that, but she’s coming from the NYPD to do this. Even if she was a man, she would face some pushback for this. But being a woman, there’s even the possibility of bigger pushback. The most consistent line across all promos is that if she fails, it will be another 20 years before another female gets the role.

There’s a lot riding on Abigail “Tommy” Thomas, and she knows it. But this isn’t a woman who will succumb to the pressure. She’s going to work with it to make sure she succeeds in a role that many people will want to see her fail in just to prove a point.

And then there is a family drama element to it. From the sounds of things, she’s let her family slide because of her career, which is something that happens for many women in higher positions. I’m sure we’ll see more of this, as she tries to find some sort of balance.
