Prodigal Son: Would Malcolm and Dani work as a couple?

Prodigal Son Season 1, Episode 13 seemed to finally tease the potential of Malcolm and Dani. Would the two work? Should they embark on a relationship?

After a few hints here and there, Prodigal Son Season 1, Episode 13 finally seemed to officially tease the possibility of Malcolm and Dani getting together. Or at least, the potential of them getting together. Now the question is whether this is the way the show should go. Could the two even work?

There have been hints from the beginning that the storyline was going this way. Malcolm opened up to Dani around in ways that he didn’t with anyone else. Sure, it was mostly to serve the case, but he never worried about what she would say or do afterward. He’s felt a little more at ease with Dani than others.

Malcolm’s not even all that embarrassed by the fact that she knows he sleeps with chains or now that she knows his mom hired a nurse to look after him. He just rolls with the punches.

Then there’s Dani, who has let Malcolm into her life a little. However, she’s still got plenty of walls up, but if she was going to talk to anyone, I get the sense that Malcolm would be that someone. She knows that he’s opened up a fair bit to her and trusts her and he certainly doesn’t gossip. He’s not someone to really judge, not on a personal level in the way many others would. Malcolm is all about the profile.

They can trust each other. And that goes a long way in a relationship.

Problems between them

Yet, the two are very different. It’s these differences that would make it harder for them to make a relationship work on Prodigal Son. They have vastly different background, different expectations from life, and different ways of doing everything. While opposites attract and they could work through some of their differences, can they really work through them all?

It’s mostly Malcolm’s personality and his mental health issues right now that could cause the relationship not to work out. This isn’t to shame him, but to point out that he has a lot going on. When he has tried to have some sort of normal relationship with a woman, he’s upset her with his ability to profile people. He freaked Eve out when she spent the night at his place.

Dani knows more of Malcolm’s past and of his psychological trauma, but knowing and seeing are two different things. Seeing everything that Malcolm goes through could cause a negative impact on Dani as it could become too much for her.

Is Dani even interested?

It’s clear that Malcolm is interested in Dani. When Malcolm thought that he was going to die, it was clear that he was going to say something about what he felt about her. However, he decided against it in the end.

We’ve not seen any indication that Dani could even feel the same way. While she has built up a friendship with him and trusts him in many aspects, she’s never shown any attraction to him. She’s watched him with caution and fear, but more as a friend and colleague than someone who wants to be with him.

Do we really need it in Prodigal Son?

Something to consider is whether the relationship is all that necessary. Do we need Malcolm and Dani to take a new step in their relationship? Should something happen between them that breaks them up, it would cause everything at the precinct to shatter.

While I get that an attraction between two people can certainly be there, it doesn’t mean they have to act on it. However, this is a TV series, and many viewers will want to see a relationship eventually happen. In a way, I’d just love to see this will-they-won’t-they relationship continue in the way that it currently is.
