CSI revival: 3 things that have to be in the new CSI series

3. Something just a little weird

What made CSI: Crime Scene Investigation stand out the first time around was that it wasn’t a typical procedural. It was a bit different in a number of ways, such as focusing on the night shift, and having the setting be Las Vegas when the majority of TV crime dramas were (and to an extent still are) set in either Los Angeles or New York.

But it also struck the perfect balance between finding different cases to investigate, and keeping its realism. It never felt over the top, but weird things happened. And if the show is coming back we don’t want to see just another case of the week like we could see on any other network. We want to see something that’s uniquely CSI.

Las Vegas has changed, even in the five years since the series finale ended; the writers could do something that plays on that, especially since the overall feeling fans will have going in is that sort of nostalgia, wanting to see our old friends and find out who they are now. The show could work in some of the Vegas headliners; Criss Angel once had a guest appearance as a killer, albeit in an episode of CSI: NY, not Las Vegas.

The sky’s the limit with what the writers could come up with. They’ll have multiple episodes; who knows if that will mean several cases of the week with an ongoing subplot, or one case that has to stretch over the full run. Especially if it’s the latter, why not have fun with it? This is a show that sent Catherine to a furry convention and had all kinds of strange serial killers.

There has to be a good idea for coming back, and it has to be more than “we just want to see these characters again.” Any CSI revival can’t just be a puff piece; it needs a great story, and a story that we haven’t seen before.
