3. The return of Phil Brooks.

“Lonely Hearts” features the return of an NCIS character we haven’t seen for a while. Phil Brooks is one of Gibbs’ best friends and a retired Navy captain. Brooks is best remembered from the NCIS season 12 episode “Cabin Fever” that featured Gibbs, Brooks, and Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) going on an “intervention” at a cabin Gibbs happens to own in the woods.

Brooks is in this NCIS season 17 episode because he is dating Stacy Gordon (guest star Daphne Zuniga), a woman seen on a dating app on the phone of a dead man. After meeting each other on the same dating app, and only seeing each other for only four weeks, Brooks seems to be head over heels for this woman, and of course, Gibbs finds that hard to believe.

After doing his own research on Stacy, Gibbs sees a bunch of red flags and tries to warn his friend to stay away from her. Brooks doesn’t like when Gibbs tells him that his new girlfriend is a person of interest and potential murderer. He then offers to go undercover to prove that Gibbs is wrong about his new girlfriend.

At first, Gibbs rejects the offer. He refuses to put his friend in danger, but he realizes soon afterwards that the only way to get the information he needs is by utilizing Brooks. All Gibbs needs him to do is bring him a strand of Stacy’s hair to test against some of the evidence in Kacie’s lab, but NCIS has him fail miserably—and that isn’t even the worst of it!

Stacy ends her relationship with Brooks. But in a desperate attempt to patch things up, Brooks goes back to Stacy’s house, only to find the place broken into and his now ex-girlfriend missing. His attempt to call Gibbs for help ends up getting him abducted, too, and taken to the same cabin where Stacy is being held.

The bad guy in “Lonely Hearts” turns out to be a crazy, jealous ex boyfriend of Stacy’s. Gibbs and his team come to save the day, with Brooks trying his best to stall and keep the gunman talking by rambling on about accounting and other unimportant stuff. Brooks bought Gibbs just enough time to come in and shoot the gunman, saving both Brooks and Stacy.

It wasn’t a pretty ending, but it was an entertaining one. Anytime Phil Brooks is involved with NCIS, the episodes always seem to be somewhat humorous, joyful, and insightful. Hopefully, NCIS will bring him back again.
