Line of Duty actress Vicky McClure has the starring role in Trigger Point, a new British TV crime drama produced by Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio.

Vicky McClure will soon be in not one but two TV crime dramas, because the Line of Duty alum was announced Thursday as the star of upcoming series Trigger Point.

Trigger Point follows a bomb disposal team in London’s Metropolitan Police. It’s the first series created by Daniel Brierley, and will be produced by Jed Mercurio, the creator and showrunner of Line of Duty.

McClure, who currently stars as Detective Inspector Kate Fleming in the hit BBC One drama, will play main character Lana Washington in Trigger Point. Lana is a hotshot bomb disposal officer who begins to suspect that her unit is being specifically targeted by a serial bomber.

“ So grateful to be working with Jed again,” McClure said in Thursday’s press release, per Deadline, which first reported her casting.

“I’m really looking forward to creating a strong, bright and troubled character in Lana Washington. Daniel Brierley has produced a brilliant and nail-biting script. I can’t wait to get started later this year.”

It’s important to note that Vicky McClure taking this lead role doesn’t mean that she will be leaving Line of Duty, which is still one of the most popular British TV shows in any genre.

Line of Duty series 5 has already aired in the UK and is scheduled to be released in the US through Acorn TV in May.

Though the show hasn’t been renewed for a sixth season, if McClure is shooting Trigger Point later in 2020, she should be able to complete that project before any new season of Line of Duty would need her.

The premise of the new show certainly sounds interesting and the fact that Jed Mercurio is acting as a producer, and has been mentoring Brierley, is also encouraging.

Mercurio may be the most sought-after British crime writer at the moment, and provides a veteran presence to help build up the series—not to mention instant credibility, because the fans of Bodyguard and Line of Duty will at least give this project a chance with his name attached to it.

McClure’s casting is an immediate feather in the cap, too, and prompts the question of whether or not we could see any other familiar faces as the program fills out its cast. At the least, her being the star should attract some other great actors as well. This should be one to watch whenever it arrives, presumably in 2021.
