Should Prentiss have taken the blame for Reid on the Criminal Minds series finale
Prentiss lost out on a promotion on the Criminal Minds series finale after she took the blame for Reid’s decision. Was this the right thing for her to do?
Toward the end of Criminal Minds Season 15, it looked like Prentiss was going to move on to make history. She was being suggested as the new head of the FBI, but things changed in the Criminal Minds series finale. A mistake by Reid led to Prentiss being taken off the list.
Reid didn’t realize that Everett Lynch’s mother was suicidal. An explosion that killed six FBI agents had to see someone take the blame. That someone wasn’t Reid. Granted, he was one of the victims but it would have still been easy to point the finger who called the shots at the scene. Instead, Prentiss took the blame.
Another woman affected by a man?

For some, it’s yet another case of a woman’s role being affected by a man. Reid was the one that made the decision, so why were her career prospects affected? And this is what has been in two minds. Is it a case of a woman losing the chance to make history because of one man’s call?
Well, yes and no. It just happens that it’s a female in charge at the BAU. However, had it been Hotch and he was the one being put forward for the chance to be the head of the FBI, the same thing would have likely happened.
After all, it wasn’t just Reid that made the mistake. Every single member of the BAU overlooked the suicidal element of Barbara Lynch’s personality. Nobody stopped Reid from calling the shot.
It does stop with Prentiss
Now, I don’t like it when a female takes the blame for a man. It seems like the expected thing because heaven forbid the possibility that a man takes the blame for his own actions. However, this situation is entirely different to the usual case.
Prentiss is the chief of the BAU. She is the one that makes the final calls. It would have been up to her to make sure her team was right. Of course, she trusted her team, so would trust them to make the right calls.
This time, the call didn’t pay off. There was a mistake because, let’s face it, everyone involved in human. With such a personal case, there was always going to be the high chance of error.
Man or woman, the buck was always going to stop with the person in charge. That’s always the case. The leader will always be the one to blame for a subordinate’s mistake. It’s then up to the leader to decide whether punishing the subordinate is right.
In this case, Prentiss was never going to punish Reid. One) he was in the hospital and two) he had the deaths of agents on his conscious. Weren’t they punishment enough?
In short, Prentiss was right to take the blame. It was her team and she had all the final calls. She trusted Reid to make the right one.
