The Big Sky has added Ryan Phillippe to its cast, with the Secrets and Lies alum playing a pivotal role in David E. Kelley’s ABC crime drama.

David E. Kelley’s upcoming TV crime drama The Big Sky has added the biggest name yet to its cast—Ryan Phillippe has been tapped as a series regular.

The actor will play the supporting role of Cody Hoyt in the ABC drama. Cody is the husband of one of the show’s main characters, Jenny Hoyt (yet to be cast). Jenny and Cody are separated, but like his wife, Cody is an ex-cop.

He gets recruited when it turns out that one of the missing sisters Jenny and her partner Cassie Dewell (also not yet cast) are looking for happens to be their son’s girlfriend.

Phillippe most recently starred in USA‘s small-screen adaptation of the movie Shooter, taking over the main role of Bob Lee Swagger from Mark Wahlberg. That show lasted three seasons, ending in 2018.

But TV crime drama fans know him best for appearing in another ABC series, Secrets and Lies. He starred in the first season of the anthology show, which was based on an Australian drama of the same name.

His character Ben Crawford was suspected of murdering a young boy, and pursued intensely by Detective Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis of Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones). When he discovered that it was in fact his 12-year-old daughter Abby who was the killer, Ben confessed to the crime to protect her.

The second season of the series mentioned briefly that the decision cost him his life—Ben was himself murdered while in prison.

The Big Sky will be Ryan Phillippe’s first series regular role since the cancellation of Shooter. His subsequent TV appearances have all been one-episode guest spots, most recently in an episode of the Will & Grace revival.

He joins a cast that includes John Carroll Lynch (The Drew Carey Show) and Kelley’s sister-in-law Dedee Pfeiffer as state trooper Rick Legarski and Denise Brisbane, Jenny and Cassie’s manager at their new private investigation firm. It’s an interesting combination of supporting actors; they’re not a group of people you’d expect to see on a show together, but that could make it even more fun to watch.

There’s no word yet on who might play the two leading roles, but they’ll definitely be cast shortly, because ABC already gave the show a first-season order back in January. The series does not have a premiere date yet.

Next. It's about time David E. Kelley made a crime drama. dark
