After that major cliffhanger at the end of Stumptown Season 1, all eyes are on the renewal news. Could the series be canceled due to the SVU spin-off?

All eyes are on whether Stumptown will be canceled or renewed, especially after that mother of all cliffhangers to end the finale. However, news about the SVU spin-off could mean that ABC is looking to cancel the show.

Despite extra episodes for the series ordered early in the run, Stumptown has continually performed poorly in the live ratings. They did start to pick up towards the end of the season, but it was a little too late.

The one thing keeping this series safe has been the delayed viewings. It’s consistently performed well on Hulu and in the DVR ratings, suggesting that the timeslot just hasn’t been great for it. Fans hoped that the delayed viewings would mean a renewal. Yet, ABC hasn’t renewed or canceled Stumptown just yet.

Now it looks like a cancellation may be possible Co-showrunner Matt Olmstead is reportedly being eyed for the SVU spin-off, according to Deadline. The former Chicago PD showrunner hasn’t taken up the job just yet and things are still in the early stages for the Chris Meloni-led drama, but there is a chance it could mean something bad for Stumptown.

However, don’t panic just yet!

It’s not too uncommon for showrunners to have multiple shows on the go. Sera Gamble is co-showrunner on both The Magicians and You, while Krista Vernoff runs both Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19. It’s highly possible with the right team behind him that Olmstead could choose to run both Stumptown Season 2 and this new SVU spin-off.

It’s not like he hasn’t been involved in multiple shows at the same time at a high level. He’s been EP on both Chicago Fire and Chicago Med at the same time. And he ran Chicago PD at the same time as all that.

One of the benefits of the SVU spin-off is that he wouldn’t be starting from scratch to develop a series. It’s building on from a character already beloved by fans around the world. Meloni’s character Elliot Stabler was on the first 12 seasons of Law & Order: SVUand as one of the show’s lead characters.

While there’s still a lot of work, there’s a chance of a great team. It doesn’t outrightly mean that Stumptown is canceled and Olmstead is looking for a new job.

And Stumptown certainly needs a second season after that cliffhanger. We have a lot of questions and fans will be furious if ABC ends things like that. However, it’s not unprecedented for networks to leave us hanging forever.
