NCIS: Jimmy and Kasie prove why we need platonic relationships on TV shows
Many TV shows tell us male-female friendships develop into something romantic. NCIS’s Jimmy and Kasie prove platonic relationships are needed.
NCIS Season 17, Episode 19 gave us a fun ride with Jimmy and Kasie working together. While many shows will push romantic relationships down our throats, this series continues to remind us that platonic relationships between men and women are both possible and needed.
Throughout the hostage situation, both Jimmy and Kasie were able to keep their cool. Now granted, they have both worked in some sticky situations in the past. They have faced danger, so they have a good ability to remain calm in stressful situations. However, it’s usually their colleagues in life-or-death situations and not them.

Yet, Jimmy and Kasie supported each other. When Jimmy stood up to the bullies, Kasie had an idea that there was a bigger plan. And she was quickly able to offer a distraction that Jimmy needed to give Gibbs time and space to get into the diner.
Had the two been a couple, we’d have a storyline of each one trying to protect the other. While they are friends, they were able to take their own feelings for each other out of the equation. They could put the focus on the job that needed to be done.
I’m not saying Torres and Bishop wouldn’t be able to do the same, but they would certainly sacrifice themselves for each other. We’ve already seen that Torres would put himself in the way of a car to save Bishop.
Jimmy and Kasie were just able to keep the attention on the tasks at hand. They could offer some comedic relief for each other, but could both also agree that others needed them more. We saw them at their strongest when they were in that diner.
By spending time with each other, they’ve both learned each other’s cues. They’ve figured out how to be supportive. Kasie could tell Jimmy wasn’t quite himself when he stood up to the bully. But instead of getting annoyed that he picked that time to stand up the criminal, she knew that there was something bigger. She took the time to find out what that was and didn’t argue with Jimmy’s assertion that Gibbs would come straight through the door when the phone was thrown out of the window.

And then there was the ending. Jimmy and Kasie aren’t going to suffer traumatically after their events. They know that they can be put in harm’s way and they’ve been through dangerous situations in the past. With each other, they’re able to work through their potential trauma and just enjoy surviving.
Having a platonic friendship in the diner meant that a lot of issues and problems were skipped over. It kept the focus on the intense situation and not personal feelings for each other.
It also reminds us that males and females can be very good friends without romantic entanglements getting in the way. Sadly, this can be overlooked in the world of shipping TV couples but is important if we want shows to give us something real.
NCIS airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS.
