Nell Jones had to make a decision about her career in NCIS: LA, and it looks like she’s walking away. Will her exit be permanent?

NCIS: LA Season 11, Episode 18 saw Nell make a big decision. We knew from the synopsis that it was possible that Nell was going to consider leaving the team, but did we really think that everything would go down the way it did? And is Nell’s exit going to be permanent?

The episode saw Nell tell Kensi that she couldn’t be part of the team anymore. She’s struggling to deal with everything that she’s faced over the years, and she thinks walking away from the job she once loved is her only option.

Hetty understood when Nell was finally honest with her. It didn’t take long for Hetty to offer Nell the chance to use her vacation days. However, she wouldn’t immediately accept Nell’s resignation. Instead, she told Nell to think things through while on vacation. If Nell doesn’t return, then Hetty will accept the resignation.

Is this a permanent exit?

When Nell left at the end of the episode, she took a look around the office. It was almost like she was saying goodbye, admitting that she really wasn’t going to return after her vacation.

That doesn’t mean Nell will walk away permanently. This storyline certainly adds drama. It makes us wonder whether the woman who seems to be geared up as Hetty’s replacement (should Hetty ever leave) is walking away from the job. After all, out of all the characters, it makes sense for Nell to walk away after dealing with her mother’s ill health and her and Eric taking a step back in their relationship.

It’s possible that while away, Nell will get the breather that she’s needed and get a chance to work through her feelings. She’ll get her head back in the game.

Renee Felice Smith hasn’t said anything about leaving NCIS: LA. She didn’t mark Nell’s exit with a goodbye post, which does suggest that this is just a temporary leave of absence and Nell will be back—likely next season.
