What an intense end to Prodigal Son Season 1 finale. Didn’t it seem rather fitting as a season finale? Well, it turns out it was the intended ending.

The Prodigal Son Season 1 finale was nothing but spectacular. It took us on a journey full of twists and turns. The only way to bring an end to the current plight was to kill Endicott, but would Malcolm be able to do it?

In the end, the finale seemed like an extremely fitting finale. Considering the show came up two episodes short because of the pandemic, it seems almost like it was fate to end here. Well, actually, it was just some excellent timing.

Prodigal Son‘s filming was switched around in February. Due to Michael Sheen’s theater performances that were meant to happen, the show had to film the final two episodes of the season before Episodes 18 and 19. According to an interview with Deadline, creators Chris Fedak & Sam Sklaver opted to write and film the finale and then planned to bridge the gap after.

However, when it was clear filming would be shut down, a few tweaks needed to be made to Episode 17 so that it would be a smooth flow into what did become Episodes 18 to 20. The two missing episodes were going to be more standalone episodes, although there would likely have been some elements mixed in with Jessica and Ainsley for continuity of the story. Those episodes can be used for Prodigal Son Season 2 assuming that it will happen.

Could you imagine not having those final two episodes filming? It’s almost like this show was fated to end properly.

If the episodes had filmed in order, we would have ended with what become Episode 18. That means we would have been left with the major reveal of Endicott involved in the mystery of the Girl in the Box. We would have found out the Girl in the Box was still alive but that the entire Whitly family would be in danger.

Now that would have been a stressful cliffhanger ending! At least we sort of have a wrap-up of storylines. However, it’s clear that there’s far more to come. We need a second season. FOX, may the right decision!
