Hightown premiered on Sunday. Now that I’ve had a chance to watch it a couple of times, here are my biggest questions from the series premiere.

Firstly, I’ll admit to being a little underwhelmed by the Hightown series premiere. There isn’t anything overly different about the show compared to many other TV crime dramas. However, I do appreciate that we get a lead female character who isn’t apologetic for being completely flawed.

The show has a lot of potential if it can get past the clunky dialogue and the, so far, predictable storyline. There are certainly plenty of questions arising from the series premiere. Here are the five I need answers to.

5. What is Jackie running from?

More from TV Crime Dramas

Jackie (Monica Raymund) is unapologetically flawed. She drinks heavily, enjoys not being attached to anyone, and enjoys partying and drugs. To her, life is perfect. However, there are a lot of problems and it’s clear that she’s running from something.

After crashing her car and almost killing someone, Jackie is forced to head to rehab. It’s time for secrets to come out, but what will she learn about herself?

4. Can Jackie please drop the ‘I’m in law enforcement’ pickup line?

Okay, not really a question about the show but more of something that will help me enjoy the show. She clearly uses the “I’m in law enforcement” as a pickup line. I was really glad one lass didn’t fall for it. Can she please stop? It’s going to become the “Mark me” of Hightown. Outlander fans, I’m sure you get me.

3. Does Ray have something to do with the killing?

Ray is looking for answers about the dead girl that washed up on a beach, but it’s clear he’s into some shady things. He doesn’t mind entrapping people to get them to do their bidding, but something doesn’t feel genuine about him asking the questions. It’s like he’s just trying to get answers so he can cover up some of his own possible connections.

2. Will Krista make it out alive?

Nobody knows that there was a witness to the murder. Krista was in the bushes and now she’s terrified. I don’t blame her with the way the murder happened.

She wants out of town. The question is whether she’ll be able to get out without being in a body bag.

1. What does the ship captain have to do with the murder?

At the very end of the episode, we got a clue as to how the dead girl ended up on the beach. The fish ship captain clearly has something to do with it. He likely just took the body and dumped it—but didn’t dump it well enough. Why is he working for some gang? What secret does he have?
