The Rookie Season 3 is set to shine a light on police brutality
It’s a difficult world for those running cop dramas. With calls to cancel some, writers are looking for ways to keep the storylines genuine and raise awareness, while keeping them entertaining for all. The Rookie is one of those shows with the third season around the corner.
There’s no doubt that conversations about police brutality have to happen. Conversations about systemic racism need to happen, something that The Rookie hasn’t touched on much since the start. Despite its diverse cast, it’s shied away from some of the topics focused on race and violence.

That may be because the show originally started as a lighthearted dramedy. However, the ratings since the Season 2 midseason premiere make it clear that dramatic storylines that help our favorite characters grow are necessary and wanted. So, it’s time to get serious.
According to Deadline, that’s what will happen during The Rookie Season 3. Of course, at first, the show will need to wrap up the storyline involving John Nolan being framed as a dirty cop. Once that is done, there can be a focus on police brutality and systemic racism. The writers are already at work with experts to make sure the stories are told properly.
The Rookie Season 3 premieres in the fall
ABC has also decided to be optimistic with its fall 2020 schedule. Most of it will remain the same, expecting shows to return to filming soon. That won’t be a problem for those filming in LA, as the city starts to open up again. The good news is The Rookie is one of those shows.
The show will keep the Sunday night slot. After struggling at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, we all initially worried about the sophomore season on Sundays. However, it turned out to be the best move for the cop dramedy, allowing it time to grow and tell great stories.
Stumptown Season 2 will remain on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. While the live ratings were down, it was an excellent performer in delayed viewings, so keeping it on Wednesdays makes more sense. The new drama Big Sky will take over Tuesdays at 10 p.m. While it has been a problematic timeslot, FOX and The CW not airing a normal fall could help.
