Joanna spent the whole of Burden of Truth Season 3, Episode 5 focused on finding something, anything that would help her win Kodie’s case. It’s time to break down the events to work out the biggest questions pushing us forward.
There was some great news for Joanna. Her case involving family law will move into corporate law. She finally has something that she’s confident about, and it’s all because of one weak link in the chain that’s causing Millwood families to be forced apart. The drug testing company has false negatives—but is it purposely or due to a fault somewhere?
That’s something for Joanna to figure out. She does need Kodie to keep fighting, though. Here are the big questions after Burden of Truth Season 3, Episode 5.
Will Kodie remain sober?
Joanna got to Kodie’s house as Kodie contemplated drinking. Just one sip and it would have all been over for Kodie. She needs to remain sober, even if it is difficult and seems hopeless.
Now that Joanna has proof that the lab is giving false answers to tests, it’s time to fight in a way that Joanna knows how. It’s still not over for Kodie, but it’s a start.
Is the lab hiding something they’re doing on purpose?

The head scientist at the lab was certainly shifty. He lawyered up pretty quickly, which suggests that the false results aren’t a mistake. Someone in the lab is purposely bringing false results.
Everything is connected in Millwood, and this isn’t any new information. Millwood has routinely covered up for those who pay big money. Now we have Family Services that is reliant on splitting families up, which means as many failed drug tests are needed as possible. This doesn’t feel like faulty equipment but someone in it for the money.
What will happen between Luna and Kat next?
Kat and Luna opened up to each other during the episode. It was a chance for the two of them to empathize with each other and support each other. We got this look at women holding each other up.
The very end saw them connect in another way. Luna kissed Kat, who certainly didn’t complain. However, Kat has made it clear they can’t let this go any further. Luna is Joanna’s sister, who is Kat’s boss. Things would get too messy.
It’s hard. I understand Kat’s view—it’s often best to keep personal and professional separate. At the same time, Kat and Luna seem great for each other and I will totally ship that!

What will Billy and Joanna do?
Meanwhile, Joanna learned that she’s pregnant. This is what started the idea of false results. Joanna’s initial test was a false negative (and yes, they happen all the time with pregnancy tests).
However, it opens up the need for a conversation between Joanna and Billy. Where are they in their relationship? What about their business practice? What about all those other secrets being kept? They need some honest conversations now that Joanna has told Billy she’s pregnant.
Can Owen keep his head?
As Joanna focused on finding a new way to win Kodie’s case, Owen was dealing with Mercer. Mercer is building up public support. No matter how innocent Owen is in everything, the public will take Mercer’s side. And we know that it has a lot to do with race.
Owen needs to keep his head if he wants to keep his job. The last we saw was him leaving Diane for a few days. However, this is dangerous. Diane is the person that helps to keep him calm. What will he do now?
