Burden of Truth Season 3 reminds us of the power of female friendships

Many TV shows give us women who tear each other down. They’re constantly looking for a way to trip someone up, betray them for their own gain. Burden of Truth offers something different.

While one of the storylines did look like one woman would try to tear down another, it’s become one of the strongest relationships on Season 3. We’ve also had the chance to see other friendships blossom. This show promotes strong female friendships; always having each other’s back.

We need female friendships to be portrayed right on screen. Not all women are out to get each other. We’re not shallow, mean-spirited people. We want our friends to succeed and many of us want to help our friends to reach their goals. I know far more women like this than I don’t, and I’m grateful for a show like Burden of Truth that portrays this.

Kodie and Joanna

Let’s start with the friendship that we see play out as children on the screen. The two have gone their separate ways as adults, but when they were children, they had each other’s backs. Kodie literally helped Joanna run away, even though eventually, the two had to return.

This is something Joanna feels she owes Kodie for. To Kodie, it meant very little. At least, that’s what she says right now. She doesn’t feel like Joanna owes her anything. Yet, it remains a friendship of support.

As soon as Kodie’s kids were taken, Joanna was there. She made it her mission to win the case. Even when Kodie kicked Joanna off the case, Joanna stayed. This is what friends do.

Joanna and Diane

Then there’s another friendship on the show, one that we’ve seen blossom for a couple of seasons now. At one point, Joanna makes it clear why she is such close friends with Kodie and Diane. They were the only three non-white girls in the school and that made them allies. They’ve remained friends.

During Burden of Truth Season 3, Episode 5, Diane went with Joanna to the other school. She knew what to say and all about the potential of over-reporting cases instead of listening to the children. Instead of telling Joanna to drop the case and drop the research into the school, Diane was there by Joanna’s side.

At no point did Diane stop Joanna from going through with questions. In many shows, a woman in Diane’s position would hold her friend back, realizing that maybe it wasn’t a good idea. It would just add to the problem. Instead, Diane was strong-willed and supportive, just what a friend should be.

Kat and Luna

Not all friendships are based on childhood and high school. Some form afterward.

It can be hard to form friendships as an adult. I say that as someone who moves around a lot and finds it hard to make friends in real life. However, Luna and Kat have found their way to each other.

Episode 5 offered us a look at them offering each other support. Kat quickly realized why Luna was stalling on going to Millwood and gave her a pep talk. It wasn’t one filled with judgment, but one that was full of hard truths and tough love. Sometimes, that’s exactly what people need.

Later, Luna got Kat to open up to her a little when it came to the talk about moms. Luna quickly backtracked realizing that Kat had lost her mom at a young age. At the same time, Kat felt comfortable opening up to Luna a little.

This has led to them potentially being something more than friends. Right now, Kat doesn’t want to cross the professional line just yet. That could change, though. And I hope to see that things don’t change between them when it comes to support.

Female friendships can be powerful. They can be supportive. And I’m grateful Burden of Truth reminds us of that.
