What are the chances of The Alienist Season 3 happening?
The Alienist is over for another season. This one certainly seemed much shorter than the first, especially with the way the episodes aired. Now we need to know if The Alienist Season 3 is going to happen.
So far, TNT hasn’t made a decision on the fate of the show. During the pre-season Paley@Home panel, the stars had hinted that they would be up for another season. They enjoy their characters, especially the reasonable development all characters have gained.

When it comes to ratings, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness didn’t perform all too badly. It was a sharp drop from the first season, but this does come two years after the first season premiere. So, the drop isn’t that surprising. The way the show aired probably didn’t help matters as viewers aren’t used to two episodes back to back every week.
It will be interesting to see if the show gets a boost when it comes to Netflix internationally and when it (presumably) comes to HBO Max. The first season is currently there, so we can expect the second season to stream there in the future.
Is there any material for The Alienist Season 3?
This is where things get tricky. The first two seasons followed Caleb Carr’s books. Those two books followed the characters in the late 19th century. There is a third book, but it doesn’t follow Dr. Kreizler, Sara Howard, and John Moore. Instead, the book titled “Surrender, New York” is set in 2016.
We could see the three actors play roles from the book, but it wouldn’t be the same. Part of the beauty of the series is seeing modern-day problems in the 19th century.
According to Bustle, showrunner Stuart Carolan needs another book set in the 19th century with these particular characters. He only wants to continue if there is the source material there. It’s certainly a smart move considering the success already.
Carr does currently have another book in the works titled “The Alienist at Armageddon,” which is expected to be released in 2022. So, there will be a wait for a third season.
Hopefully, The Alienist Season 3 will happen. We suspect it will be worth it.
