Fargo season 1 ($9.99)
Genre fans will think of Martin Freeman from Sherlock first, but he got an Emmy nomination for his role as life insurance salesman Lester Nygaard in the first season of FX’s anthology based on the 1996 Oscar-winning movie of the same name.
The first season won the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, though the show is now on its fourth season (premiering this fall). In Season 1, Billy Bob Thornton plays a hitman who crashes his car in a small Minnesota town and immediately runs afoul of many of its eccentric residents.
An excellent and varied ensemble also includes Allison Tolman (Emergence), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Colin Hanks, Julie Ann Emery (Bosch), and Jordan Peele. And you don’t have to have seen the movie to enjoy the show.

Hannibal season 1 ($4.99)
Also based on a popular film, Hannibal is a prequel that features Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) in the title role of creepy psychologist and serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Hugh Dancy (The Path, Homeland) co-stars as FBI profiler Will Graham, who consults Lecter but eventually realizes his true nature and forms a complicated, dangerous relationship with him. Dancy is the third actor to step into the Graham role, after William Petersen (CSI) and Edward Norton.
The series is definitely not for the faint of heart—it’s violent and twisted, and goes well beyond the boundaries of the TV crime drama genre. But it was a cult hit when it originally aired on NBC and its cancellation sparked massive outrage.
Power season 1 ($4.99)
If you want to see crime from the criminal’s perspective, there’s the Starz series Power, which features Omari Hardwick (Dark Blue) as James St. Patrick, a nightclub owner who’s looking to put his past as the drug dealer “Ghost” behind him. Naturally, that doesn’t last long.
The show weaves a very tangled web between the criminal elements and more than a few complicated relationships, and the personal drama sometimes overshadows the crime drama. But Hardwick is great and a breakout performance comes from Joseph Sikora as Ghost’s longtime friend and right-hand man Tommy.
With the series having completed its run on Starz, you can now start here and binge-watch the whole show if you want (which might be a good idea since there’s a prequel series on the way!)
