Power Book II: Ghost is renewed for season 2.

Power Book II: Ghost is getting another chapter. Starz has ordered Power Book II: Ghost season 2, according to a press release issued this week.

The TV crime drama is the first of several planned spinoffs from the network’s hit original series Power, which ended its run earlier this year. Ghost focuses on Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) as he balances the drug trade with the college education required to gain his inheritance.

According to the press release, the premiere episode was watched by 7.5 million people in its first week, making it the most-watched new series in Starz history.

The network is also reporting a 42% subscriber gain in the three weeks since the spinoff has been on the air.

With Power Book II: Ghost renewed, Starz officially lays the foundation for building an entire original programming strategy around the  Power franchise. There are three more spinoffs in various stages of production, with the Tommy Egan-led series starring Joseph Sikora having just moved up the timeline.

“I am incredibly humbled by and grateful for the response from our Power fans—the best fans in the world, period,” said creator and showrunner Courtney A. Kemp. “To have our fans return, and bring new viewers to the first spinoff in the Power universe, is a dream come true.

“In the second season, Tariq’s journey with the Tejada family will get even more complicated and more dangerous,” she added, “as he begins to understand the man he’s going to become.”

The announcement about Power Book II: Ghost season 2 comes as Starz is also working to drum up further excitement for the first season. The network plans to split it into two parts, meaning a mid-season finale is airing in two weeks on Oct. 4.

The remaining five episodes will then be shown at a date to be announced, presumably some time in 2021.

In the episodes that have already aired, Tariq is doing everything he can to support the legal defense of his mother Tasha St. Patrick (Naturi Naughton, also reprising her role from the original series). Tasha is on trial for the murder of Tariq’s father, James “Ghost” St. Patrick, but they both know it’s a crime that she didn’t commit.

However, her son is caught between a rock and a hard place. He’s enrolled in an accelerated program at college, and if he wants to collect the money that his father left for him—which could also help save his mother—he must graduate. And there are plenty of politics surrounding him at school, including a love triangle and overly involved professors who might get too close to finding out about his criminal activities.

The next episode, the show’s fourth and the next-to-last one before the aforementioned break, airs this Sunday, Sept. 27.
