Why would Gibbs shoot McGee at the start of the NCIS Season 18 premiere?

The opening minutes of the NCIS Season 18 premiere saw someone shooting McGee. We initially thought it was a criminal, but it turned out Gibbs shot McGee in the leg.

Why would he do such a thing? It’s going to be a while before we find out considering these moments took place in March 2020 in the timeline and we jumped back to November 2019 after this.

However, there’s only one reason Gibbs would do something like this. Well, unless we’re going into the world of Alex Rider.

Gibbs must be protecting McGee or someone on that plane

Gibbs is protecting something. Make note that he didn’t opt for a kill shot, which he would have usually done with a sniper rifle. He wanted to temporarily take McGee out of the chase, which meant a shot to the leg that probably wouldn’t kill him.

It could be that Gibbs wants to protect McGee. Maybe McGee was getting too close to danger and McGee hasn’t listened to something Gibbs has warned him about. That seems odd, so it must be that Gibbs knows a secret about the plane.

Could this all link back to Fornell? The former FBI agent asked for two weeks at the end of the NCIS Season 18 premiere, but there’s a chance those two weeks could turn into four months. We could pick up the story to find Fornell is involved with that plane, that it’s something to do with Fornell’s daughter.

Gibbs does these sorts of things to protect the ones he cares about. He cares about Fornell, even if he doesn’t want to always admit it. He cares about McGee, Bishop, Torres, and all the others. There’s no way he would shoot one of his own if there wasn’t a bigger thing at play, something McGee was getting too close to that would be dangerous for either him or others.
