TV crime drama Blu-Ray and DVD highlights
A number of great TV crime dramas have recently arrived on Blu-Ray and DVD that make excellent TV crime drama gifts. There was no better crime drama this year than The Nest ($27.99), starring Line of Duty‘s Martin Compston and Bodyguard‘s Sophie Rundle as a couple whose desperation to have a baby lands them in a dangerous predicament including secrets, drugs and murder. It’s an emotional and character-driven thriller every fan needs to see; our review is here.
Award-winning TV crime drama Killing Eve released its latest season this year. Killing Eve season 3 ($19.99 Blu-Ray/$16.96 DVD) features more of Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh going back and forth in their murderous game of deception and obsession. You can read our in-depth review here.
On the lighter side, there’s Bad Mothers ($24.49). Tess Haubrich (Treadstone) leads a great cast in this series about a woman whose perfect life falls apart when her husband—played excellently by Strike Back vet Daniel MacPherson—is accused of murder. While the murder mystery has some poignant things to say about marriage and social anxiety, the supporting characters also offer up plenty of fun.
People who like their crime dramas of the period variety should see the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Complete Collection ($84.96). As the title indicates, it contains every outing of Essie Davis’ title character, including the Crypt of Tears film, in one convenient package.
TV crime drama streaming services
If you don’t have a favorite show necessarily but love the genre, or just want to broaden your horizons, the best bet this holiday season would be to sign up for any one of a number of services that stream TV crime dramas, mysteries and thrillers from all over the world.
Acorn TV began streaming the excellent Law & Order: UK this month and also offers up other great shows like Line of Duty (where it’s the exclusive home for series 5), Midsomer Murders, The Nest, The Sounds and Mystery Road.
Over on Sundance Now you can catch the bone-chilling true crime drama Des, starring David Tennant and Daniel Mays, as well as series like Bad Mothers. Things on BritBox are a little more classic, with various Agatha Christie adaptations, and long-running favorites like Silent Witness and New Tricks.
All three offer limited free trials to new subscribers, so you can try them all out and find the one (or hey, even ones) that are right for you. But between the three there’s no shortage of great new mysteries and crime shows to stream when you’re looking for something to keep you guessing.
Precinct TV’s holiday gift guide is the solution to everyone’s holiday shopping mystery. Hopefully you’ll find something TV crime drama-related for you or someone you love this holiday season!
