Top 3 new crime shows of 2023

3. Will Trent

Probably the best network offering of 2023, this ABC dramedy offered a great lead character in Ramon Rodriguez’s title character. As the dyslexic GBI investigator, Trent’s quirky mannerisms are on full display as he works on weird murder cases. He may aggravate everyone around him but Trent’s genius overcomes his problems to break a case in style.

He’s surrounded by a great cast, with Erika Christensen as his on-off love interest Angie and Iantha Richardson as his partner. The last few episodes are thrilling, with Trent tracking a killer, a conspiracy, and his own past. Thankfully, ABC is giving it a second season to continue one of the best series of this year.

2. Deadloch

This Australian series looked like the usual setup: A small community jarred by some brutal murders, with the local cop working with a big-city inspector to solve it. The difference: It’s also one of the funniest shows of the year.

Kate Box and Madeleine Sami made a beautiful comedy duo with their clashing cops forced to work together amid antics from botched murder scenes, a misogynist medical examiner and more. The murder plot itself took some intriguing turns to lead to fun, but no other show could thrill you one minute and make you laugh out loud the next, so here’s hoping it continues for the next year.

1. Poker Face

Rian Johnson’s love letter to the TV detective shows of the 1970s was also one of 2023’s best TV delights. It all rests on Natasha Lyonne’s Emmy-nominated turn as Charlie Cale, a human lie detector on the run from the mob who keeps stumbling into murder cases.

The guest star cast is to die for, and the clever setups of the “perfect” murder interrupted by Charlie’s arrival are nicely done. The fun of watching Charlie discover the truth is wonderful and the first season a smash hit to showcase one of the best detective shows of not only this but any other year.
