The first trailer for Boston Blue shows how Danny Reagan meets the Boston PD and kicks off a major spinoff.
For the first time in 15 years, Blue Bloods is not airing on CBS this fall. While the cast and crew of the long-running drama hoped it could continue, the main Bloods show is done. Thankfully, it’s not the end as the series is kicking off a new spinoff with Boston Blue.
While Blue Bloods fans had batted around various spinoff ideas, the new Blue Bloods spinoff series will follow Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan as a case takes him from New York to Boston. As it happens, Danny's son Sean has moved to Boston and joined the police force there (likely to get away from the shadow of being a Reagan in the NYPD).
That has Danny deciding to stay in town as a cop. It'll be strange seeing him without his family and the usual Blue Bloods touches. Thankfully, the new trailer shows that Danny gets not just a new partner but a new family to set up a new era in his life!
Watch the start of a new partnership in Boston Blue
The Boston Blue trailer focuses on Boston as we see Danny Regan chasing a suspect. He loses the guy and is held at gunpoint by Boston detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). That includes some banter between them on the differences between a badge and a shield.
The pair soon start a partnership with Lena noting Danny “has a reputation” and he fires back, “yeah, for getting things done.” It seems the pair are off to a good start, getting along and taking part in raids while seeing Boston-set crime scenes like one at a Revolutionary War ship.
Don’t worry, Blue Bloods fans, we still get family dinners as Danny is invited to join Lena’s blended family. That includes her pastor grandfather (Ernie Hudson) intoning "we are one family and we have faith in our family.”
We also get glimpses of the other characters, such as Lena’s mother Mae (Gloria Ruben), the Boston District Attorney; Sarah (Maggie Lawson), Lena’s stepsister and a cop herself; and Lena’s younger brother, Jonah (Marcus Scribner), who’s a rookie patrolman alongside Danny’s own son, Sean (Mika Amonsen).
It ends with Lena asking, “Ready to run it back, Brooklyn?” and Danny replying, “Try to stop me, Beantown.”
There’s no glimpse yet of Bridget Moynahan, who will guest star in the pilot as her Erin Reagan character. Yet the first trailer shows this spinoff has the flavor of Blue Bloods and will be a worthy follow-up for fans!
Boston Blue premieres on Friday, Oct. 17 at 10/9c on CBS.
