A lot of broadcast networks are holding their top shows until October, but there are some great crime dramas returning in September. We have a run down of those coming back and those not just yet.
For the ones not coming back, we’ll include a date of when they’ll return. This is only for shows coming back after taking the summer off. We’re not including new crime dramas, whether new to all or acquired from Canada, on this list. We’re also not including the shows that have already aired on a streaming network first, so Law & Order: Organized Crime isn’t included on this list.

Coming back in September: High Potential
The first of the crime dramas to return is High Potential. This sophomore show will air on Tuesdays on ABC, and it’s set to pick up off the big cliffhanger of the first season. Morgan has learned that she likely bumped into the man who put Oz’s life at risk in the parking lot of the grocery store, and now she won’t stop until she’s caught him.
However, he has a mind like hers. Because of that, he’ll be able to stay ahead of the game as well. Fortunately, she has a team of people, and it’s clear that Daphne has picked up on Morgan’s way of connecting puzzle pieces, so she may be able to help with this.
High Potential season 2 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10/9c on ABC.

Not coming back in September: 911
While ABC will have High Potential return, not all of the crime dramas on the network will get dates in September. We’ll have to wait a little longer for 911, and no, this likely has nothing to do with fear of how many people will tune in after the death of Bobby. The delay is good for consistency, and that’s what ABC has aimed for in recent years.
The ninth season will see change, though, as the 118 continues to deal with the loss of Bobby. That means a new captain is needed, and it looks like Chimney is the man for the job. On top of that, Eddie is back in Los Angeles with his son, and Buck has stopped looking to move away from the firehouse. What’s going on with Athena now that she’s sold the house she and Bobby were building, though?
911 season 9 will return on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c on ABC.

Coming back in September: Murder in a Small Town
If you’re looking for a case of the week story with a bigger overarching plot for romance, then you’ll want to turn your attention to the return of Murder in a Small Town. This crime series follows a detective who moved to a smaller town for a quieter life. He just doesn’t get to have that.
While his love interest, Cassandra, faced a dangerous situation in the first season, she still wants to be with Karl, and they sealed that with a kiss. However, the second season is set to bring in some problematic characters, including Marcia Gay Harden as Mayor Christie Holman.
Murder in a Small Town season 2 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 8/7c on FOX.

Not coming back in September: Chicago PD
We’re used to getting our favorite Chicago crime unit back in September, but that’s not happening this year. We have to wait just a little longer for Chicago PD season 13, which is where we’ll find out exactly what the fallout is going to be like for Voight and his team after the death of Deputy Chief Reid.
The new season will also see another change at Intelligence. Toya Turner’s Officer Cook is leaving, and we’ll get a new female officer coming in ready to prove herself. Since she has a love for danger, could she end up putting a few lives on the line while she finds her feet?
Chicago PD will return on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 10/9c on NBC.

Coming back in September: Law & Order
NBC will still have some crime dramas coming back in September, and the first on the list is Law & Order. We’ll get to see the two teams back, as we watch the police catch the suspect and then the DA prosecute to get justice for the victims. Of course, there are always a few personal agendas to deal with at the same time.
The new season will see a change, as Mehcad Brooks is leaving the show. Detective Riley will get a new partner, but it will be interesting to see why Shaw has left the force. Could it have something to do with Price?
Law & Order season 25 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on NBC.

Not coming back in September: FBI
While a couple of Dick Wolf shows are returning in September, clearly not all of them are. Not only is Chicago PD getting held for October, but so is FBI. It shouldn’t be as surprising about FBI, though, as CBS has started to hold shows for October to help with the consistency on the other side of winter hiatus.
When the show returns, we should get answers about Isobel. She collapsed at the end of the seventh season, and things didn’t look great. Will she be killed off, or will we get to see her forced to take some time off to recover? How will the team deal with either of those scenarios?
FBI season 8 premieres on Monday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c on CBS.

Coming back in September: Law & Order: SVU
Finally, it’s all about Law & Order: SVU, which is the longest running crime drama on the air right now. There is no sign of this stopping, because sadly, there’s no shortage of headlines to rip from. Despite all of these stories, people aren’t seeing the bigger problem in the world.
Olivia Benson will be back to find the perpetrators of sexual assault and rape. She will then help to catch the suspect to allow the DA team to get justice for the victims. She does all this with heart, because despite everything she’s seen, she still has humanity left in her.
Law & Order: SVU season 27 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.
