FBI: International was likely going to add to the Fly Team in season 5

It only seems obvious that Tyler Booth was going to join the Fly Team in FBI: International season 5.

It was pretty clear with Jay Hayden’s return in FBI: International season 4 that the plan was to make his character Tyler Booth a permanent member of the Fly Team. Sadly, FBI: International was canceled, so that dream didn’t come true.

Derek Haas seems to have hinted to TVLine that it was going to be the case by saying how great Jesse Lee Soffer and Jay Hayden were together. It sparks up all sorts of ideas about what could have been had Tyler joined the team.

Either Vo or Raines would leave, opening space for Tyler in FBI: International

At the end of FBI: International season 4, Vo and Raines were up for a promotion. Only one of them would get it, and that promotion would take them back to the United States. It would mean a spot on the Fly Team would open up, and that meant a permanent place for Tyler.

It just made sense for Tyler to get it. While Smitty wasn’t his biggest fan, he did get on well with the rest of the team, and he was especially close to Wes Mitchell. Of course, Wes was going to want his friend on the team with him, as he could have helped Tyler push for a promotion in the future when the timing was right.

There was too much backstory given for Tyler for him not to end up being a full member of the team. We also got way too much time between Tyler and Wes, which Haas praised, to make it that Tyler was always going to leave and do his own gig.

Tyler’s issues with Smitty could have come up in FBI: International season 5

By bringing Tyler into the team on a permanent basis, it would have created some issues with Smitty in FBI: International season 5. She didn’t like the way he did things, especially when it came to causing problems with local authorities. This meant that Smitty had to do more work to calm people down, and she was ready to resign from the Fly Team because of some of Tyler’s antics.

So, this could have created in-team drama. There would have been a chance to see how the two could end up making their differences work for the case, and we could get to see how the two would eventually learn from each other.

At the same time, we would also get more of Tyler and Wes’s friendship play out on screen. This offered a chance for more backstory for the two of them, as well as a chance for them to talk out their issues. It’s rare we get these positive male friendships that involve openness and feelings, so that is something TV needs to show more often.

FBI: International is available to stream on Paramount+.
