We get an interesting case in High Potential season 2, episode 3. Everything you think you know from the promo is wrong, and this is certainly an episode with heart.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for High Potential season 2, episode 3.

The newest episode of the series picks up with the team handling the aftermath of the Game Maker. It’s time for Morgan to get back to work full-time, and that means finding a sitter. Ludo is great, but he’s admitted that he needs help, and this could be a way to work with Taran Killam’s schedule as he landed a series regular role on a comedy series.

The case of the week involves a man who goes to a restaurant to meet with someone. As he opens up a box with a ladybug pin, someone jumps out from behind him and smothers him with a plastic bag. He’s not dead yet, though!

Morgan realizes that everything was manipulated in High Potential season 2, episode 3

The man ended up being found in the alleyway behind the restaurant. The server says that she was alerted to ducks there, but Morgan notes that there were no ducks. There wasn’t any duck poop to collaborate that, so what took the server out there?

Plus, why did the server pick a specific table outside? Well, the rest of the tables were all messy from previous customers, except that Morgan notes that all the spilled drinks were on the floor. There’s no way that people only hit the floor and not their own legs, so the entire situation was staged to make sure Nathan, the now braindead man, sat in a specific seat.

As the cops get Nathan’s phone, Morgan also finds out that the alarm tone is ducks. Someone wanted Nathan to be found in time.

This wasn’t about loan sharks

When we got the promo for High Potential season 2, episode 3, we learned that the initial belief was that Nathan was in a lot of gambling debt to the wrong people. Sure enough, that’s right, but it wasn’t loan sharks who were after him.

Well, there was one who was going to put an air bubble into Nathan’s bloodstream to make his death look like natural causes. It turned out that Nathan’s life insurance policy beneficiary was the loan shark. He didn’t do the murder, though.

Neither did the original beneficiary, his daughter. She had only just come back into his life, and she had no idea that her dad, who was notorious for his gambling and money problems, even had a life insurance policy. On top of that, she is pregnant.

Nathan was going to give up his heart in High Potential

As the puzzle pieces started to fall into place, Morgan and others were able to figure out that Nathan was going to give up his heart. He was a direct donor, and the hospital is rather cagey about who will be the recipient of his heart. Is it possible that this person was the one to kill Nathan?

Not at all! The big Hollywood bigwig was on the way to another hospital to get a different heart, so he wasn’t the direct recipient. However, he did threaten the hospital to pull all of his funding if he didn’t get the heart that Nathan had, so there still was some shady dealing going on there.

Instead, it all goes back to a person who would know how long someone needs to be gone for and then revived to be brain dead. It’s give-or-take 11 minutes, and it doesn’t take long for Morgan to look at the people on UNOS who were the likely direct recipient of the heart. Yes, it all links back to the paramedic who was there to get Nathan’s heart started again.

It all comes out when the heart is stolen on route to a hospital, and Morgan is able to work out that the direct recipient was going to be the paramedic’s mom. Sadly, this mom won’t get the heart now, but Karadec does learn that it won’t go to waste. The heart will go to a 17-year-old girl, so at least there is some good from all of this.

Ava gets arrested in High Potential season 2, episode 3

As all of this is going on, Morgan decides to tell Ava about Arthur and Roman before she goes to school. That is the perfectly wrong time to do it, and Morgan does eventually admit that. However, it’s not until Ava is arrested for destroying one of Roman’s murals. The business owner wants to press charges.

Morgan even gets herself arrested when she flings paint all over the arresting cop. That’s a great bonding moment.

It’s at home where the real bonding happens, as Ava ends up helping Morgan with the case a little. She’s the one that works out the Hollywood bigwig is likely the recipient of the heart. All of his new social media posts are with old images, making it clear that he’s hiding an illness. Ava is able to point it all out from her knowledge of the world of Hollywood and stars, showing that maybe she is like her mom after all.

At the end of High Potential season 2, episode 3, Ava admits that not knowing anything was better than finding out Roman was just a state away. She wanted to believe that her dad was away for a good reason, but now it looks like he’s just a deadbeat as she thought for the longest time before all of this. Morgan is still sure that there’s something to it, but she can’t figure out what it is just yet, but it looks like Ava isn’t going to learn details until she needs to from now on.

High Potential airs on Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC.
