I love High Potential, and I love the relationship that Morgan and Karadec have. I’m on the side of them not getting together romantically, but this post isn’t about that. Instead, it’s about a comedic element to the show that really needs to disappear.
Yes, I’m talking about how Karadec makes comments about how Morgan will contaminate the crime scene when he leaves the room. It’s something that no longer translates well when it comes to the state of policing.

Karadec has changed while Morgan has not in High Potential
One thing that this shows is that Karadec is willing to let go of his own morals. He’s able to allow a crime scene be knowingly contaminated, which could completely affect the case (and later the prosecution’s case), and it’s all played for jokes. When we first met Karadec, he was a by-the-book cop, and he was shocked to find out that Morgan had brought the evidence home with her.
Meanwhile, Morgan hasn’t changed one little bit. She does her thing because everyone knows that she’ll spot a clue that nobody else does. She’s allowed to not wear gloves while looking around, because, hey, it’s breaks the case.
The problem is that Morgan’s actions would lead to most cases falling through in court. A lot of the evidence would end up being inadmissible. Karadec knows this, and he really should put his foot down to get Morgan to do things the right way until a crime scene has been reopened to the public again.

The Morgan-esque character has been overdone in dramedies
When it comes to police dramedies, this Morgan-esque character when it comes to the view of procedure is everywhere. There’s always some sort of consultant who isn’t interested in doing things the official way, whether it’s wearing gloves, picking items up, or even handling evidence in the right way. This a trope that has been over one in the world of cop dramedies, and it’s time for a show to take a step back from that.
The problem is that High Potential is probably too deep into this. It’s become expected that Karadec just turns his back, but that makes it look like he doesn’t care about his work as much anymore. There are ways for Morgan to do her thing without contaminating the evidence!
Show us some growth in Morgan’s character. Break the mold of cop dramedies, and find another way to bring the humor into it. This is starting to become a crutch, and with today’s view of policing and the judicial systems, it’s important to showcase policing done right.
High Potential airs on Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC.
